I've played all three saga games and blade chronicles. But never gears.

Finally getting ready to shit down and door this game. I'm kind of excited.

I hear disc 2 is ass but 1 is great.

Af5er that that it's my first breath of fire 4 run, then legend of mana.

But first to finish the parasite eve series

Disc 2 isn't ass - it's just a lot different than what disc 1 is. Be prepared for a lot of monologues, with some breaks in between for dungeon crawling.

Square had a rule that every game be finished in 2 years back then so for this game they ran out of time. 2nd disc plays itself because otherwise the game would've been in development too long.

Parasite Eve (1) is pretty short, so you shouldn't have much trouble moving on to Xenogears.

Gear combat can be stupid at times, especially since it's not very well explained. Tips:

1. Near the beginning, when you first get to the desert town, the plot pushes you into the desert. Make sure you learn at least one deathblow before then.

2. The game acts like any combo earns you stuff through repetition, but only the ones that end with X do. And when you get to some of the really late-game ones, not every combo that ends in X, either.

3. Buy the most powerful Gear upgrades you can, every time you come to a store. Grinding does basically nothing for Gear combat except increasing your MP or whatever, which for most characters, doesn't matter much.

4. The game doesn't explain this anywhere I could find, but you can activate Hyper Mode by getting to level 3 and then defending. The chance that it activates is given in the HUD. Hyper Mode lets you do really powerful attacks every turn for a few turns.

5. You're not really given any good options for recovering Gear HP, so you mostly just want to go wide-open offensively. But save your energy in dungeons because you're not really given any good options for recovering that either.

All I can think of ATM.

This is relevant for a large part of the first disc, but as you get further on, you'll gain gear parts and accessories that will allow you to heal massive amounts of HP and MP on your gear.

Which will really save your skin in a few particular fights but it costs so much fuel that it's still less than satisfactory for most fights.

Now that you mention it, I think a Boost Charge is a decent fuel recovery option, even if it takes two turns to use.

But overall, the situation you'll normally find yourself in is racing against damage as well as your own fuel consumption.

You know, if we didn't have the Gears in Gears, I likely would have enjoyed it a LOT more. I got to a Gear fight I could not fucking win, and just gave up.

I found it boring so I stopped at that city you go to after getting the prince and haven't picked it up again.
