Most of those people are from poorer countries so having branded clothing and other items = status and prestige to them.

I guess it depends on which people you hang out with. In my fraternity I still hang out with, a lot of them are crazy about brand names. For me literally, I get my clothes from Ross and Burlington Coat Factory because I care more about prices than I do about stupid name brands.
