He was a bizarre choice. The script and the performance paint two totally different characters.

I generally go with the Nostalgia Critic's opinion when it comes to Christensen. He's a good actor who had the look of a "young angry Darth Vader" but he was directed horribly.

But he really did look the part. A lot of the actors did. Too bad only Ewan McGregor could make the lines work. And Ian McDiamird too I guess.

Yeah, it was Lucas's fault. He directed the actors to be like that. He thought that was good.

When Samuel L Jackson's acting is terrible in a movie, you know the director is bad.

He watched that one episode of Goosebumps and determined Christensen was the perfect choice for Anakin.

I mean, we all know that George Lucas is a one trick pony with an ego the size of Utah, but there had to be like an army of executives from the studios that could have exerted some sort of control over him.

Not at the time.

And the armies of execs saw nothing except "Lucas prints money, so listen to Lucas."

Ah, well, he sure printed something.

To be fair though, it's not like the movies didn't make money. They were still huge blockbusters and divided from the series they'd probably have a cult following right now. Don't get me wrong, they were awful and so radically different from the series that it's practically heresy, but they made bank.

I also regularly run into people that argue they were way better than the originals and that the rest of us are just blinded by nostalgia.

I thought Episode 1 was one of his worst performances. Dude is an amazing actor and he was wasted on playing this stoic boring jedi. Same thing with Sam Jackson, he does not work well at all in his role.

Yeah? I liked him. I thought he did the Jedi master well. He basically codified the idea of a 'grey Jedi' and I think the calm, stoic but subtly snarky performance enforced that well. It also reminded me a bit of old Obi-Wan, which was probably intentional and worked well. Different strokes, I suppose.

Could have been Paul Walker but he chose Fast N Furious instead.

If he would have chosen the dark side he would still be alive.

This. Lucas is very good with visual effects and CGI but sucks at writing believable dialog and engaging stories, directing human actors, setting and maintaining tones, and understanding what people liked about the original trilogy that he had a big part in creating.

The prequels showed what he could accomplish without oversight from above and non-yesmen directly around to keep him in check. But they did make him ridiculous amounts of money and have been sparking conversations for years now. Plus I'm sure that everybody posting in this thread has seen all three prequel movies at least once, I've personally seen episodes 2 and 3 twice each, so that's a thing.
