No, he apologized because an international news organization threatened to plaster his name on headlines.

now im not going to argue that posting racist/anti-semetic stuff is not despicable, because it is

but this guy is not a public servant, he's not a celebrity, he's not even a public figure unless you investigate him, dox him and make him one etc.

being a racist asshole shitposter on the internet is not a crime, it's just a gross thing to do. so why does this guy now have to publicly apologize for being the way he is? it's not even like the gif that he made has anything to do with racism, anti-semitism, etc so why does it matter?

from my perspective it looks like trump (being the mental 12 year old that he is) tweeted a funny meme, CNN got embarrassed, and decided to go search for who made this meme and out him for being a dirtbag in unrelated activities so they could take some of the ridicule off of them for a minute.

hoenstly it reminds me of when that ken bone guy asked a question at the debate, and then someone tracked him down and reddit and made all of his porn comments into a news story as an attempt to drum up controversy.

just strikes me as really scummy. the personal character of a guy who made this meme is not at play here and has no relevancy, so idk why it's being discussed.

Damn it, Antifar, connect the dots. CNN does not give a rat's ass about this Redditor's crappy posting history. There are probably tens of thousands of other Redditors who have posted far worse things and no one is targeting them. CNN used that specific guy's posts as leverage against him and as a way of justifying to their readers what they've done. Now when we have discussions like here on CE about a major news agency threatening to dox people, it's easier to deflect by saying Oh, that guy deserves it. Didn't you see what he posted on that site that other time? It's completely irrelevant, but some people buy into it.

No sympathy for online racists who think they can post dangerous rhetoric anonymously. Being exposed is just the risk you take.

Next time, tell your president to do his homework when it comes to what he tweets. He has a history of promoting racists and this is the backlash that may come from it. He should probably stop doing that

That is definitively not why he apologized.

Unless you believe that he is no longer racist and is genuinely remorseful for his actions, he apologized because he was threatened via ruining his life. If anything, this ordeal has just given him a persecution complex and is no less mired in his ideals.

as a rule of thumb now should we vet the personal character of all people who create content online? if i want to watch a funny dark souls pvp video, should i make sure first that the guy who created the video is of upstanding moral character?

i get that if you are the president of the US you should be more careful about what you tweet (in an ideal world, my president would not be tweeting fucking memes and ranting on twitter every day like a teenager), but this whole situation just leaves a bad taste in my mouth and seems really, really weird

People need to stop apologizing just because other people don't like what they did. Fucking stupid. If I had posted that gif and thought it was funny (which it is) I wouldn't have fucking apologized. I would've simply said, "I'm sorry that YOU don't find it funny, but I do. If you're taking something negative out of this, then that's your own stupid perception."

Wasn't much of his apology because of, you know, the other stuff on his Reddit profile?

why does he have to apologize for the other stuff?

It is the duty of CNN's Ministry of Love to put an end to all crimethink exhibited by an individual, not just the one that got their attention.

I think it's very easy to say this when you're not being threatened by a global news corporation. Also consider his shitty posting history. He may have apologized just because he was on the verge of being outed as an enormous troll.

If your posting history on GameFAQs was available, you may be quick to apologize and avoid going viral, too.

Especially given how the left will try to ruin your life based on the accusation of being a bigot.

Then maybe don't be a bigot.

It's one thing if we're talking about exposing someone whose posts were taken out of context and made to look much worse than they were intended. But if you're a proud internet troll constantly posting racist and horrible shit...maybe you should be responsible for what you say.

Irrelevant. News agencies should be the first line of defense to protect all freedom of speech, not be the first ones to erode it by actively shaming anyone who posts anything they disagree with like a Tumblrina.

did you know he was a bigot before CNN investigated him and outted his online persona?

no? neither did CNN.

So it's like a police officer performing an unwarranted search and then when they find something they say "Aha!! we found this weed, we got you. See, we got that filthy criminal!"

CNN got butt devastated over a meme and their using irrelevant details to justify their shittiness.

I would agree in situations where someone was shamed for posting "I'm conservative and I'm for smaller government" or "No more tax hikes." That's stuff that can be disagreed with and people shouldn't be embarrassed about.

But being a troll and constantly posting hateful stuff? Meh. You get no sympathy from me. For the record, I'm not on CNN's side either. They should be above this petty shit.

I respect trolls far more than this. This is the worst possible attitude you can have and even trolls deserve to be held to higher respect than this kind of belief. Trolls can be shrugged off, this line of thinking is downright dangerous.

I guess this is just where we disagree. What I do respect is the way that guy's apology was worded, because it makes my point:

As time went on it became an addiction as to how far it could go with the posts that were made. This has been an extreme wake up call to always consider how others may think or feel about what is being said before clicking the submit button anywhere online that an opinion is allowed. Free speech is a right we all have, but it shouldn’t be used in the manner that it was in the posts that were put on this site. Just because you are behind a keyboard doesn’t mean you can’t hurt someone with your words or cause a situation such as this one where a simple meme is misconstrued as calling for violence.

The only thing I disagree with is when he says I am not the person that the media portrays me to be in real life, because the reality is he portrayed himself to be a hateful bigot with his posts. You can't spend so much time being racist/sexist/bigoted online and when your posting history is brought up, say "Oh, it's not what it looks like! You've got the wrong idea about me!"

Anyone who is actually upset or offended over the stuff the guy has posted online, needs to take a break from news/media/internet and maybe go camping for a few days or something. If you're at that point, you've seriously lost a lot of perspective and understanding of reality on a much grander scale.

Yeah, I think I'll hang out at the beach for a while. Not that I'm all that upset, but stepping away would definitely be more productive and healthy.
