Their White costars:

"Hawaii Five-0" stars Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park have left the CBS show after the network refused to pay them as much as their white costars, Variety reports.

Sources told the outlet that Kim and Park were seeking salaries equal to those of stars Alex O'Loughlin and Scott Caan, but they were unable to reach a deal with the show's producer, CBS Television Studios.

CBS's final offer to the two actors was reportedly "10-15% lower" than the salaries of their two white costars.

A representative for the network told Variety in a statement: "We are so appreciative of Daniel and Grace's enormous talents, professional excellence, and the aloha spirit they brought to each and every one of our 168 episodes. They've helped us build an exciting new Hawaii Five-0, and we wish them all the best and much success in their next chapters. Mahalo and a hui hou."

The CBS reboot of a police procedural drama premiered in 2010, and Kim and Park starred alongside O'Loughlin and Caan for seven seasons.

Kim's and Park's characters, Chin Ho Kelly and Kono Kalakaua, respectively, will not appear in the show's eighth season.

I don't watch this show, but are they leads or sidekicks? If they're just sidekicks, then I can understand why they're paid less. But if they also have top billing, then I can see where that would be a problem.

well that's the issue, isn't it? You read the words "Asian co-stars" and automatically assume they're just sidekicks

Never watched the show, but I believe the two guys, white guy and Asian guy are the leads while the girls are both secondary characters.

From what I saw, they were leads. They maybe didn't have quite as much screen time sometimes, but they were a pretty important part of the team. They certainly had important plot points centered around them. I'd say they deserved the same amount from the episodes I saw.

they were leads not side kicks
but a lot of people do watch the show for the chemistry between the 2 white leads

so i dont think this is an issue of racism more as an issue of fan popularity

Knowing this, it's reasonable for the white guys to be paid more.

If the situation were reverse, we'd be laughing at the white dudes.

Would you take half of your current salary for the same job you work now? You're still making more than zero!

This means both of them can pursue other projects.

And good luck with them finding jobs now that everyone knows they want to be paid top dollar.

This. And i'm sure this is going to look real good for both of their careers when being considered for other parts.

Neither of them were the stars of the show, i've seen quite a few episodes and i'd consider them both secondary characters, which generally don't make as much as the stars regardless of race.

Were there as many factors in the negotiating process? I mean, if you're looking to hire somebody, you only need to pay them as little as they will agree to work for. If the white actors had more competing offers, or refused initial offers for whatever reason, and the Asian actors didn't, there's no issue with what they did, and those guys are acting like children.

Seriously, imagine agreeing to take a job for a certain amount of pay, being excited about it, and then being butt-hurt because you found out other people you're working with are making more. They aren't taking anything away from him. Be thankful for what you have, and learn from your mistakes if things don't go as you expect. Trying to point fingers, call foul, and make this into a racial issue is really immature, and thus should be ignored.

"Learn from your mistakes but don't ask for more money when re-negotiating."

Absolute genius from one of CE's resident intellectuals.

When did I say people shouldn't ask for more money after they've already agreed to a certain amount? That's perfectly fine. If they don't agree, learn from your mistakes once again.

I don't really see the problem, then, because they wanted more money and left when it wasn't offered. Seems like a fair end result to a salary negotiation.

Edit: also, the only thing that made this a racial issue, it seems, is the article

The only reason anyone might have heard of Scott Caan before Hawaii Five-O was either the fact that he's James Caan's son or from Entourage which he had a recurring role in. Maybe Ocean's Eleven too as he was in that, but it was hardly a starring role and I can't imagine anyone would think of Scott Caan when they think of Ocean's Eleven. I can't even say that people might know him from Ready to Rumble because David Arquette got every single piece of publicity from that piece of shit.

The other guy appears to have been a complete nobody before Hawaii Five-O.

I always thought it was meant to be an ensemble show with the 4 main character crew. I checked out way back in the first season though lol. If the show fails due to this (and it's entirely possible it will) they'll be justified in their decision to leave.

I think all of the Hawaiian actors have left the show now right?
