Why is "OH come on he's only slightly worse than these guys of the street!" considered a fair defense?

Here's a fun game. Every time you write a defense about Trump, imagine instead that Obama or Kennedy or Carter or Bush did what Trump just did and you were defending them. Then imagine what the response would be.

I don't defend the play but I will point out that its a gimmick that has been going on for over ten years and three presidents. The fact that people are only making a big deal about it now shows that the current president and his supporters are especially thin skinned and paranoid.

They made a movie about killing Bush and nobody cared.

If someone made a movie about killing Trump it would be headline news for 8 months

The two aren't equivalent though. One is a production of a play that predates the President even existing, and one that denounces the murder of a leader for ideological reasons, and one that's done about every President.

The other is the President, who has made the media into an enemy, showing a gif of himself bringing violence to a media outlet who is critical of himself.

A more apt comparison would Kathy Giffen posting a picture of herself holding Donald Trump's decapitated head, another Twitter picture of someone bringing violence to someone they disagree with.
