Yeah, I believe it. Yoshi got FOUR spinoffs (Yoshi, Yoshi's Cookie, the international version of Panel de Pon "Tetris Attack", and Yoshi's Safari), and one of the best SNES games of all time (Yoshi's Island).

Too bad Yoshi's Story ruined that momentum. Not that it was a bad game, but it was more than several steps down from Yoshi's Island.

Mario Party 2 is the game that made me love Yoshi. I had played Super Mario World prior to that, but not very much of it.

But how could anyone not love Pirate Yoshi?

It blew my mind as a kid, lol. Although the instruction manual clearly states he is a dinosaur (that, and the game taking place on dinosaur island, you would think people would put two and two together, lol), I also had some family members that used to call him a horse.....a green horse, =/

But yeah, I can definitely vouch for how popular yoshi was back then.

Everybody loved Yoshi. I was a Sega kid and I loved Yoshi. He was a dinosaur! Dinosaurs were crazy popular back then.

Yoshi was one of the first characters I remember being both adorable and completely badass. What sold the latter concept was his indestructibility - after dying on spikes in countless 8-bit platformers for years, here comes a dino that can fucking walk on spikes. He never really died, either - he just phased out of our reality and back into it. Mario died - you could see it in his creepy bloodshot bug-eyes whenever you lost a life. When you lost Yoshi, he was just bored by it, and waited patiently for you to learn how to ride him better.
