This is the definitive order for the Dragon Age series. The animation movie was shit.

Not even. Inquisition was a piece of shit. At least I got some enjoyment out of DA2. Poorly written "an ancient evil awakens" plot, mostly unlikable and boring cast, agendas up the ass, laughable animations, boring combat, and more I'm not even going to touch upon. Inquisition was not a good game. It's sad that people gave it GOTY when it came out.

I'd say Origins/Awakening>Inquisition>II.

Origins was great, no argument there, but II was a car wreck for me. I never felt drawn in and didn't care about any of the characters. At least Inquisition built on the story I had crafted and gave me some memorable characters to journey around with, not to mention looking great for the time. I really don't get why people are so hard on modern sequels.

I mean, I get that some of them give up some of their 'decision maker' charm in exchange for better graphics and modern combat systems, but I'm sure the metronome will swing back eventually. Not to mention that a lot of older games in the genre (Origins, Mass Effect) are borderline unplayable now because of janky controls and all the improvements that games have made in the last decade or so.

I think Origins has aged pretty well.

It's not great. The controls still come off as incredibly awkward going back now, at least on console.

I agree, even if we pretend that the game is supposed to be a PC exclusive, the sound and graphics are dated, the maps are cramped and lifeless, the effects are incredibly dated, and the game's menu system feels rather obtuse at times.

I don't usually count DLC as part of the package. Mainly base game.

I was so pumped when I picked up Inquisition. Made my two handed fighting dwarf, picked up a greatsword...and proceeded to have to hit the first mob I faced like 15 times to kill it. Got about five more minutes before I turned the game off for more than a week.

All that is to say that I found Inquisition incredibly boring.

Visuals don't bother me. They aren't great but it is an 8 year old game. They do the job fine.

I liked the maps, towns, quests and pacing better in Origins than Inquisition. Inquisition areas looked great they were ultimately hollow and boring to explore. There weren't enough interesting quests. Too many of them were standard fetch quests.

Inventory system seemed simpler in Origins IIRC because it didn't have a crafting system. But again I played this on PC so I have no idea what the console version was like.

I think people have convenient memories when it comes to this. We remember all the awesome quests but forget about all the stupid fetch quests. Case and point, pretty much the entire warden's camp was comprised of fetch quests. Fetch a cure for the dog, fetch the ingredients for the ritual, fetch whatever Morigaan is looking for, etc.

It wasn't the complexity of it, it was how awkward it was to use.

You bring up a good point though; Inquisition introduced crafting, which is a great addition to the game, even if it could be improved upon.

The difference was these were just one object in areas you'd be going to anyway.

Compared to Inquisition which has an entire map filled with icons for you to collect.

I liked the characters and the overall story in 2, but I'm not sure I can ever really see myself replaying it. The repetitive nature of the gameplay wore on me so badly that I gave up doing sidequests by the third act and just rushed through to the end of the game, and I really don't have any desire to go through all that again.

My only beef with Origins is that it's basically play mage or have fun chugging poultices (which you shouldn't be drinking, anyhow). It makes sense in lore but that doesn't make it fun.

Because there were less quests. Doesn't change the dated graphics, sound, and janky controls and menu system. There were fetch quests, a lot of them. You are just misremembering.

I never said they weren't in the game at all. But there was nothing like Denerim in the game. Walking into a brothel brawl and meeting Isabella for example. Uncovering that secret demon boss fight. That political conspiracy near the end of the game. The heist plotline etc.

Orlais in comparison felt very bare and hollow. Redcliffe was no where near as interesting either.

A lot of the quests felt personal. Inquisition's motivations were generally pretty throwaway and unmemorable. They were more numerous as you said but on top of that they were longer and the payoff was generally just some Power. Not even a cool little dialogue thing or quest decision. A lot of the interesting characters and writing are on the damn wartable.

Inquisition lacked focus with most of its quests and went with an MMO grindey sort of design. Origins was way more focused and the pacing was a lot better. Doing the majority of the quests in the game doesn't feel like a grind compared to Inquisition.

I could not agree more. DA2 had its problems, but it had a pretty great cast, especially Varric + Sarcastic Hawke, by far the best friendship/bromance that Bioware's ever done (infinitely better than Garrus). Inquisition had Dorian and a bunch of boring (Blackwall, Cole) or annoying (Sera, Vivienne, Iron Bull being nothing more than a drawn out size queen joke) crap.
