Can I wear shorts and a tank top there? For some reason there's conflicting answers on this. One camp on tripadvisor says it's a GHASTLY faux pas, the other says they dress just like Americans and god dammit it's 95F and 80% humidity, and I want to wear shorts and a sleeveless shirt

dude. But I am traveling with my girlfriend. And I'm not saying short shorts or anything weird. Just normal clothes you'd see on a dude and girl walking down the street on a hot Colorado day

Sure, you can wear sleeveless shirts and shorts in public (for Malaysia). I don't see why not.

I looked there, it was pretty evenly split between people who said they wouldn't be caught dead with exposed shoulders anywhere ever, and people who said they walk around shirtless. Why is there a debate about this?

Yes you can wear it pretty much wherever you want. The only place that kind of clothes would be considered offensive is at temples and other religious sites (especially girls, have to wear something that is below the knee and covers the shoulders).

Don't walk around shirtless unless at the beach. That can actually get you fined. A bunch of us got fined last year because we weren't wearing shirts while running up the mountain for Muay Thai training.

One other little thing. Most won't care but there are some jackasses around. If you are in the north of Thailand, avoid wearing a yellow shirt, in the south, avoid wearing red shirts. It's a political thing.

People have really weird ideas about how locals dress in other countries. I constantly see people say not to wear converse or jeans in Europe because nobody wears them, but they're fucking all over there.

I haven't been in Malaysia or Thailand, but I've been in Indonesia, which is pretty similar to Malaysia.

If you're wearing skimpy clothing, they're probably going to just look at you a lot because they really like white skin, or if you have black skin, they'll look at you because they rarely see darker skinned people, at least in Indonesia.

After travelling to India and Indonesia, we started realizing how short some shorts are and how inappropriate it would be in those countries. For people here, some shorts would appear pretty long, but over there people would find them quite short. So just be careful not to show too much skin needlessly, but don't hesitate to bring shorts and t-shirts. Maybe don't wear something you'd find inappropriate to wear in front of children.

BTW in Indonesia, my girlfriend wore a 2 piece bathing suit and we didn't feel like it was inappropriate at all, so don't hesitate to go for a swim even if it means showing more skin, they'll never judge you for that.
