Like one of the comments says, if this admittedly small boycott gains any traction at all (such as from clickbait news articles), then that would pretty much sink the Metroid franchise.

this is completely ridiculous.

it's Nintendo's right to shutdown a project that is using it's intellectual property without permission.

I don't necessarily feel good about that considering it was a free project, but boycotting Nintendo for protecting their assets is absurd.

From what I heard Nintendo didn't shut down AM2R until after it was finished and released. They could have been real dicks and done it before, but since they did it after they guaranteed the game was completed and available, you're able to play it now, since once something is on the internet its there for good.

Nintendo protects it's IP or whatever and the game is finished and released. The only downside is there's no official hosting for it. That seems pretty fair to me.

The majority of people aren't even aware of the existence of the fan remake, it won't hurt their sales at all.

If you allowed the project to be distributed globally, you'd have every modder releasing new 16bit Zelda, Mario's and metroids by the droves.

The fact that AM2R's creator isn't even mad about this situation and that he's really hyped for the official remake himself makes this boycott even more ridiculous than it already is. The select few in this fanbase is literally trying to kill the very franchise they love, and the sad thing is I'm pretty sure they don't even know it.

Exactly. I'm pretty sure there's still dozens of file-sharing sites that have AM2R hosted somewhere.
And me I'm actually pretty happy about this. Instead of Nintendo simply putting AM2R into a cartridge and calling it done, they're actually making their own version that's radically different, so we're getting two different Metroid games.

There still tons of file sharing sites that have it hosted, plus torrents which are close to impossible to get shut down. It is very easy to find.

This whole thing is beyond silly. First, Nintendo has to defend their intellectual properties. They absolutely have to, due to how future lawsuits could come back to this instance if they didn't. Second, as someone else stated, they waited until the fan game was actually finished finished before sending a C&D. Third, the first screen in the game is about supporting the franchise by buying the games. The guy that made it doesn't even accept donations. He wouldn't give any information so people could donate to him, and has stated that if people liked his fan game, then go out and buy the products from Nintendo and support the franchise.

It's like these nerds have literally no understanding of how the world actually works.

So is Sega as the makers of Sonic Mania made fan games and then got hired to make a real game.

Now it is safe to say that Samus returns was in development for at least a couple years so it was already being worked on when AM2R was released so that might be part of the reason.
