Like let's say the planet's atmosphere becomes toxic, or we colonize a planet or asteroid and have to live in facilities that have air generated and filtered by machines

Should people have to pay for air just to live?

The air would be generated and filtered out by corporate or government machines, of course

Maybe a general tax to maintain the infrastructure needed to keep air flowing or whatever, but literally making people pay for air sounds sketchy as fuck.

I was mostly thinking about this because we have to pay for water, which we all need to live. air is just more immediately important and kills you after minutes of not having it rather than days

Yes, but for drinking purposes, there are plenty of ways to get free water. Most places either have water fountains or give out free cups of water.

yea, there's ways to access water for free (and food). but since air is so vital to have constantly I was wondering about the implications of it. like I wonder if some corporations would try and normalize an "air bill" the way we have a water bill in a situation where air wasn't readily available

They'd just get compensation from the government. Would be cheaper for them than trying to control delivery and measure air consumption.

Reminder that capitalists literally currently profit from selling air, and not just in a medical use.
