I usually just order 2 at once and then not tip. Then repeat the process with the other bartender. I never have too much when I go out so 4 is usually more than enough.

Then I never go back until like months later and it's usually new people. I'm not gonna tip them. I'd go back there myself and make my drinks if they let me.

I don't understand how it's so difficult to give someone a drink. Atleast with regular restaurants, the same staff member who sees you can go in the back and spit in your food, assuming you didn't tip them last time and assuming you're unlucky enough to have the same waiter/waitress.

With a bar, you're in front of them. And I don't think a lot of bartenders want to get into huge arguments with customers

It certainly requires formality and interpersonal skills if they're a bartender worth their salt, and it requires a good deal of service if they're mixing cocktails and not just handing you a bottle of beer. Fucking appropriate username.

Don't go out if you aren't going to tip unless they provide bad service. I've noticed people that don't tip don't have money, aren't getting laid, and are socially awkward

You're literally just giving or mixing a drink to hand to a customer. A robot might as well be able to do the same. Hell even a typical HS student can just do it with a basic boring attitude.

IMO, it's as asinine as tipping taxi drivers.

Not really. Just because it's an expectation, doesn't mean it's justified to do it. 2 drinks should take at most 1-2 minute. You don't deserve a tip for 30 seconds - 2 minute of work.

If you're ordering stuff all night, then that's different. Don't be so wasteful with your money just because "well it's an expectation you give them extra money even though they didn't do very much"

Except instead of helping you, they could have been helping someone that would have tipped

They are providing a service, no matter how stupid or useless it seems to you. Whether the system is bad or not it's irrelevant, all you're doing is hurting the employee not the system. You canjust buy your own beer at a store then

For a forum that sure loves assistance and programs like a UBI, it's so strange how you guys are against someone making a living. Since their income is below minimum wage and dependant on tips

To be fair, the employer has to compensate them up to minimum wage if they don't get enough tips.

Yup, and if you don't care about that, no point in worrying about it. Not like I need more than one cupof water a night anyway. And it's not like they're exactly fast with their service in the first place, no incentive for me to tip them anyway.

I mean I'd argue that engaging and conversing with your patrons is far more important to bartending and point out that mixing cocktails is a fairly exact science that requires far better memory and skill than tossing a burger together. You're not wrong but the level of engagement and talent is pretty different.

Tipping is extremely important.

My personal most important reason for keeping the tipping standard in America is the level of service we all usually receive.

If you go out often to busy bars, you'll see the bar tenders work their asses off. Very stressful, loud, fast-paced environment. They never slow down and are constantly going. Recommending drinks for you, taking instructions on how you want something specifically crafted, all while trying to pay attention to everyone else as well.

Servers are knowledgeable with the menu, and depending on what type of restaurant---very professional and skilled (not just your average college student servers. The ones that make 50k+/yr serving).

Despite the type of restaurant you're going to, you want really good service because its part of the experience. You're out downtown with your girlfriend and you two decided to get a hotel room for the night. You want to go to a nice restaurant, sample wine, and then go hit up a bar or two afterwards. You want the people serving and bartending for you to make that experience 100% enjoyable.

If they receive minimum wage/a fixed wage--- they will likely not give it their all. They'll perform what they need to do just enough to not get fired (In many cases).

Not to mention you can get kickbacks in some cases (free drinks or discounted, bar tender rings in something cheaper, etc.). This can even happen the first time you are a meeting this bartender. Same with blackjack dealers (though a little less often). I've absolutely received free hands before and I know the dealer did it intentionally. I've also been given the benefit of the doubt several times, etc---they try to take care of people as much as they can if you're nice and tipping.

Also, it keeps food costs down. Restaurants have relatively low margains and in many cases a lot of staff. Even the staff you don't see behind the scenes.

People that don't tip are, Low social status, low income, barely any friends people. Not all but most. I've bartended from sports bars to high end restaurants in downtown Chicago and it rings true throughout. People with money want good service and actually like tipping

I remember when I was bartender I had a guy come in with his family every weekend. He would look for me, hand me a 20 and would say take care of my friends and family. Every single time I would walk by him I would get 5-20 dollars. When I worked in a bowling alley and we had specific nights that tailored to a less desirable crowd, you can expect high demands with no tips

If I'm at a place where the bar tenders are making unique drinks and creating drinks, I have no issue tipping.

If I'm ordering a gin and tonic or getting a beer at a night club, why tip?

I still tip cause of social stigma and all, bit I do find tipping to be largely arbitrary

I mean ya, if people pay you more and treat you preferably with tips, you'll give them special treatment. The thing is, when someone doesn't give you that extra pay, do you treat them below average?

How do you make those statements about people because they don't tip.
