Demotions happen normally for 2 reasons:

1) Downsizing at your work place, not always the persons fault. They may downsize based on tenure. Or they did it because of #2...

2) You sucked at your job, and you're returning to your old position and someone will replace you.


I've seen people get repromoted room #1, but I've never seen someone that got demoted and then got promoted again. Is that a thing that happens?

99.9% of the time when someone is "demoted" they are basically just being used as a seat filler until the company can hire a replacement for that person

When I did ISP tech support, I got a promotion to the advanced desktop support group. The company quickly turned that into a sales-based position and I was demoted back to level 2 ISP support rep after not selling enough.

They wanted me to go back to that group again after a while, but I refused. I was trying to quit that company so hard at that point that I didn't want to bother.

It happens at my call center job, they promoto people to be team leads and then depromote them after a month, only to be put in another position after yet another month. Though I think thats because the team lead supervisor is an asshole and just promotes girls he wants to bang and guys who enable him.
