The graphics don't look good anymore but the 3D rendering opened up many possibilities in character/enemy design and directing that couldn't have happened in the previous game? The environments were all beautiful 2d pictures. Sure, the characters were blocky, but I don't mind that when it comes to characters in RPGs. I like to leave a large part of the character's personality to my imagination, like I'm reading a book or a comic book. That's why I absolutely love how PS1 RPGs play. They are simply the best. TC: When FF7 came out, people literally talked about that game at school for years. Seriously, years. It was the most popular game to talk about. People would draw pictures of Sephiroth and Cloud. People would bring the strategy guide to school, etc. I literally did this. And so did some friends, this is legit as fuck. I've personally never cared about graphics in a game, when you take into account the year/technology/etc of course its gonna look like shit compared to, say, Final Fantasy 15.
