I tried watching it last night but just wasn't feeling it.

Movie felt like it was all over the place and failed to capture the dreadful loneliness of outer space. First 30 minutes was the usual background for each character so the audience has something to connect with and feel sorry for them when they're mercilessly slaughtered. This is fine, but oh man did it drag on and on. It was a little too much and the conversations didn't feel very natural for the environment they're in. Like these guys have been confined to that tiny little space ship for months and they're still having the types of conversations you'd have on a first date. There's only so much to talk about. The Thing did a great job of showing how worn out the characters were from the monotony and really set the tone for isolation.

The alien itself wasn't very threatening imo. A pile of goop that would transform into starfishes and octopuses? Might as well have set the movie in the deep sea. The actual scenes when the goop attacked weren't very suspenseful. There was just too much noise in this movie to really build it up. Characters were constantly talking, there was a lot of music, and there was just lots of background noise. When it attacked it was just more noise. Compare that with Alien and its dead silence and it'd just pop in outta nowhere and go apeshit on a motherfucker.
