Obviously the N word is context heavy or no one would use it at all. Duhhhh

The point is bill maher didn't have the proper context to use said word (without social response) and took it upon himself to say the word regardless.

I don't think he was intentionally malicious, but most cases of racism aren't in 2017, that doesn't mean we should use the kid gloves on them.

Im not even sure if I want him to lose his job or anything beyond just eating crow.

He obviously thinks he's a little too "down" so to speak and needs to be reminded

Btw keep in mind Maher has plenty of plot armor, not only is he a "comedian" but he's a jew in hollwood with alot of clout and tenure. He ain't no kramer he's alot bigger.

The most that might happen to him is a nice FCC fine or something so HBO can say they punished him for crossing a line. Though it'd be pretty surprising and hilarious as hell if HBO fires him, though i'm sure they know if they do some other network will scoop him right up and he won't miss a beat, just like HBO themselves scooped him up when he was fired from network tv for saying the terrorists that flew the planes into the towers were brave unlike americans that bomb people from thousands of feet away in the sky etc, right after 9/11 happened

HBO and his PR are probably crafting a very carefully worded apology right now considering he hasn't tweeted or commented at all about the reaction to the whole thing

Basically. I don't think he needs to get fired, won't really complain if he does.

He just needs to be G checked is all

I don't care if it's the hard "r" or the "a" version. No white person has a right to use that word without negative backlash. And it is a double standard when it comes to political affiliations. When it's said by the left, it's treated as a joke by other white liberals. When it's said by a white conservative, they have just killed their career.

Gonna just quote this guy's post from the topic about it on the politics board.

As usual a certain subgroup of people showcase they don't understand what's offensive about the word, so they assume it's the word itself that's offensive and so it must be offensive to use it in any and/or all contexts.

Would you be alright if some random white guy walked up to you and said, "What's up my ****a?" Just curious.

A word has no meaning if it isn't said.

I was watching it live, and I knew right away that it would generate some articles.

It was the right joke, but probably wrong word. In my head it was house slave and then he went the extra mile. If I'm offended by anything it is that he went with 'ah' instead of 'er', if you are going to go there then go there. No one was ever a House 'ah' they were House 'ers', 'ah' is just the modern almost acceptable, but not really, we are taking it back, pretend variation of the word. If you are going to make the historical joke and have it stick, you have to go there.

Overall this won't affect Maher at all though. He handles controversy as a comedian pretty much perfectly (with a middle finger and calling whomever it is a pussy). Expect no apology and Maher doesn't give a fuck because he is secure in his self enough not to.

Eh, the context makes complete sense so I respectfully disagree with you there.

No, I wouldn't. That's also not the same situation at all and reinforces the quote that I listed. I'm sorry that you think starting out a conversation with it is the same as referencing history mid-conversation, but that's something you gotta work on with yourself.

Nothing about that quote suggests that the subgroup is set along racial lines and I never suggested it was.

If Bill had a clear history of being racist, and arguing against black people, and jokes to paint black people as sub creatures who deserve to stay sub, I would see the big deal here but he doesnt. Its a joke. His track record is actually arguing for black people.

Honestly Im only picturing closet racist getting upset over the fact that if they use the word in an intended negative way, the backlash they would get.

Im defending this as a black man btw.

Unlike most of the time when the "It's a joke" line is pulled out, it's actually a joke, and actually funny.

I mean he didn't call someone else the n-word...he used it in a joking manner to make fun of himself a little bit.

HOWEVER after reading a little more about Maher and tweets from people that have met him I no longer want to defend him. Also a lot of black folk are mad that he has the audacity that he thinks he can get away with it and I tend to agree with that. He IS kind of a smug jackass (part of the reason I think he shoudn't be taken too seriously) but he really should issue an apology if he is any kind of decent person.

Are you fucking kidding? He had the perfect context, it's rare to see a joke set up that well.
