Adding a full-fledged character is really expensive and time-consuming, whereas clones can be tossed into the game relatively quickly. Pastryarchy 05/29/17 10:22:40 PM #17:	Comical challenge factor via handicap and multi-player bragging rights. Pichu in SBMelee was like Roll in Marvel Vs Capcom 2. Losing to Roll in MvC2 was a point of embarrassment since she was a watered down Mega Man with less spam ability. Her only saving grace that made her semi-viable in versus was she was the shortest character in the game, meaning she could duck or even just run underneath opponent attacks other characters could not. Everything else about her basically sucked, but that was part of the point of her inclusion. She was the joke character veteran players never wanted to lose to. And if someone actually stomped with her...that's skill. That is what Pichu is in Melee, another joke character centered around evasive play. If you managed to still be legit good with it in versus play, it was a compliment to your skill. Ironically enough, Mewtwo was a similar case in Melee because of it's quirky mechanics and floaty weight.
