it feels like there is no actual consistent language and compilers implement it however the fuck they want you're not far off the grammar is very difficult to parse, mainly because there are a lot of statements that are ambiguous at face value and often don't immediately indicate a problem until several passes over the code have been made, or even until linking. the official language spec is also long enough to make Tolstoy blush I've run into a couple problems in the past with complex templates where I have to add in conditional compilation via the preprocessor just to make the code friendly to both gcc and msvc (mostly because msvc took "liberties" with the official spec) ...
