This screening is what people are calling reverse sexist--which is not a thing that exists. Reverse oppression is not a thing.

Reverse sexism isn't a thing.

Sexism is. As in; the people that literally fired me because they wanted an all female staff were sexist as hell.

The most sexist people I've ever met were feminists, and they say stuff like "you can't be sexist towards men" because that conveniently hides their intolerance. I don't understand why people can't just "be cool" with everyone.

sexism is a relatively new term that was coined (in the 1960s) due to discrimination against women in society. while it could apply to men, it rarely does, and a special movie screening doesn't cut it

The posts dealt with the legality... and they are legal. Generally women don't complain about these clubs (the complaints fall on deaf ears), and so they go to clubs where they are accepted.

This screening is what people are calling reverse sexist--which is not a thing that exists. Reverse oppression is not a thing.

Discrimination shouldn't be legal anywhere.

You could have sued them for that actually.

Doesn't matter what it typically refers to. It literally means discrimination against sex.

It's not quite that simple

Definition of sexism

1 : prejudice or discrimination based on sex; especially : discrimination against women

And yet... it is!

In the case where it is an employer discriminating: that should have been brought up to the labor board and if that's the reason for firing, it would be a thing to be settled

Whatever, though. It was a small business and we all knew each other, I wasn't even technically employed because they were sleazy.

Anyway I've seen both Women's Only and Men's Only events for all sorts of other things. Galas, ice cream socials, concerts, camping, golf, whatever. They're private events. There are also things like schools for only males or females--and fraternities and sororities.

women do get some women-only events... one thing to note is that these particular women-only events are usually meant to be safe spaces for socialization, while historically many men-only institutions held great power and excluded women from participating in the power structure (like religions, schools, government, etc.)

It's just a little odd to turn a nationally released movie into a gender specific event.

I still don't understand the actual purpose behind it. Is it to empower women?

It's for women to socialize and have a nice night out with each other while enjoying a film about a female superhero. What more do you need?

Sounds like a bunch of insecure "men" whining to me. It's one fucking showing. It's not like they're excluding men from seeing the film throughout the entire first month of release. Get over it.

"B-b-b-but if men did a men-only showing of Superman there would be outrage!"

Maybe, but it would be from similarly small-minded pissants.

it would be from all over social media, regardless if they wanted to see the movie or not

Considering literally all my friends are female and I'm a man, I need to be able to get in the door

It's just the attitude I hate, not that one theater in Texas is going to make or break anything. For some reason this gets a pass when literally every other demographic being banned from a showing a movie theater would be frowned upon. Way to go, Wonder Woman shows what feminism's all about. It pretends to be for equality and turns it into a hate group.

And all those "sexist pig men" that dared being offended by being banned from a movie theater, oh.

As one of the commenters to that article said, this is probably no worse than ladies' night at a bar; but I wonder why those are legal too.

Because ladies' night doesn't ban males from the bars. This one does so it's different.

You're right; this Wonder Woman thing is a little worse, then. I just meant that since this Wonder Woman thing is just for one or two shows, it's not going to put men at a permanent disadvantage with respect to women, any more than ladies' night at a bar does. And if, as Foxx said, men-only clubs are legal in the U.S. and Canada, these sorts of woman-favoring events are probably legal too. I just wish the woman who wrote the original article had made those points instead of just going on about how it's time women had something for themselves.

So you go to a different theater if you'd like to all go together. If I was bringing a date or friend that was a man that's what I'd do. And if I wasn't then maybe the special screening would be fun and a way to make friends. There are more than 5000 movie theaters in the US. Is that difficult?

Would you be mad about not being invited to a Bachelorette party for all of those lady friends? I'm not bothered about not being invited to Bachelor parties.

They can't actually be legal due to discrimination laws.

I've been invited to Bachelorette parties. The gender segregation in pre-wedding parties is weird anyway.

They can't actually be legal due to discrimination laws.

Nope. You'd think they would be illegal but they do still exist legally. Make it a private club or private event and you can selectively give out memberships or passes to exclude certain genders (or races). Those Men's Only Clubs do still exist (and they are usually white as heck)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_traditional_gentlemen%27s_clubs_in_the_United_States

many clubs have since allowed women in--but a good number still do not.|

Then there are other things like the Freemasons that allow women to only be Co-masons and not advance, or the Moose Club... then clubs like Kiwanis, Rotary, and Lions Club have been forced by the court to allow women in. For the truly private clubs they can discriminate all they like through Freedom of Assembly.

There's also no law against having a private event for a specific gender--like the movie screening in one theater. If you find one I would be interested to see it.
