Watching through the series, last night I watched the Roxanne episode which I'm 99% positive was the last episode I watched (I think I saw like one or two D&P episodes randomly). Although some of those early Hoenn episodes might have been new to me, because I don't remember the episode where Jessie caught Seviper, nor the episode where Max helped the Poochyena, but I know I saw the Roxanne battle which was after those, and I DEFINITELY remember that Pelipper episode from back in the day (where it had all the Pokeballs in its beak), so maybe I skipped a few back then.

So how is Hoenn overall? You don't have to worry about general spoilers like which Pokemon everyone catches and the like, I know that stuff, but try to avoid specific episode spoilers please.

I've been told by multiple people that Sinnoh is the best and Unova is the worst, but I haven't heard much on Hoenn. How would you rank it compared with the other 6 regions?

Honestly I feel like it was when the anime was taking a dip in quality. Granted my nostalgic makes it difficult to remember exactly how badly Johto dragged on. It did a lot of things poorly. Certain gym fights, Team Aqua and Magma, and Trainer's Choice to name a few.

The absolutely worst example if you somehow haven't heard about the Seviper incident.

Sinnoh is pretty great though(more so later on). I feel like actual development happened there.

Hmmm if I was to rank them now after thinking it over

Kalos = Sinnoh > Johto > Hoenn > Unova => Kanto

Kalos would be the clear number one for me if it wasn't for the ending. Some really amazing battles and Ash Greninja was hype as fk.

Sinnoh is amazingly strong with tons of great pokes with a lot of personality. Again it's a bit plagued by it's AWFUL ending.

Johto was just overall quite fun.

Hoenn (what you care about) is a bit long and dragged out which makes it a bit worse since both May and Max can be really irritating at times. Overall it's just fairly average and has a lot of slow filler. I really liked the introduction of contests with May and thought they were done quite well. I really enjoyed how May had lots of ups and downs throughout the contests.

Unova is a very mixed bag with more bad than good. The Pokemon have AMAZING personality and definitely keep Unova from being bottom of the barrel. Excadrill, Tepig (when he was Tepig), Oshawott, Axew, and many others were all really fun and it was nice to see a lot of the Pokemon actually have personality since in a lot of the other regions, only maybe a couple had any sort of personality. It's bad because Ash's companions are actually terrible.

Kanto is a huge whatever for me to be honest. There's a lot I could say about why it's last for me, but if I started on it, it'd be many paragraphs.

The first three R/S/E seasons are mostly garbage, although there are a small number of exceptions. For example, "A Poached Ego" is one of the very best episodes of the entire anime. Battle Frontier is one of the best seasons of all.

The B/W seasons are actually very good, so I disagree with the assessment you were given.

Sinnoh is indeed the best, though I say that not having watched much of Kalos. A lot of recurring characters that make for an ongoing story that's quite deep and well-developed. I don't regret my binge-watch of Sinnoh at all, and would do it again if I had the time.

I didn't do the same with Hoenn since I stopped watching the anime regularly after the idiocy that was the 7th gym badge. I did not see Battle Frontier for that reason but heard good things about it, though keep in mind that partway through the US version switched to a fandub. That is very, very tough to get used to. The biggest issue I have with the fandub is that it doesn't try at all to be funny, which at times makes it less enjoyable to watch. It was never supposed to be a serious show, even in Japan.

Johto is very hit-or-miss for me due to its abundant filler. Some of these episodes are a lot of fun while others are utter crap. Hoenn is the same thing, though the good filler episodes are few and far between. Max is easily the worst party member in the series. At least some of the gym battles and contests are pretty good.

Kanto has a high degree of nostalgia and is campy fun at times but half the time it seems like the writers had no idea what they were doing.

I can't really say much about Unova or Kalos, so I'm not going to.
