Throw it in the pan ground up?

Or make it into patties, and then cut it back up after it's cooked?

Throw it in the pan ground up, and use a spatula or something to toss it around in the pan until it's all brown. Make sure you drain the grease out after cooking.

assuming this is something for tacos, sloppy joes, or other similar stuff, throw it into the pan ground up and chop it with a soft utensil, or use whatever you want if it's a cast iron pan like a knife or something.

if it's for a meatsauce of some kind, just cook it with the sauce, don't cook it separately.

Depends on what you are using it for.
Sloppy joe? Ground.
Burger? Patty?
Just be sure to cook it well done unless you want the runs.

Salt and pepper it when you put it in the pan.

this is a bad idea unless you are working with beef you seared + ground yourself

You don't need to be an expert chef to know how to cook ground beef.

you're tempting fate. i don't recommend this.

at restaurants, if they offer the option of cooking to less than well, and there's not some asterisk about how it's on you if you get sick, then they are likely searing+grinding it themselves

hey man i am not denying that it tastes good that way or looks tasty(although appropriate amounts of salting should ensure that a well done ground beef burger still tastes great)

i am just noting that unlike steaks there is a very large surface area exposed to bacteria, and not heating it to temperatures that wipe them out can present problems

i have guests very regularly and dont want to get anyone sick.

just remember: the reason they have that statement there is the risk of getting sick is not 0

personally i just dont order burgers at restaurants. there is usually something tastier.
