Do you think the police were wrong in how they handled this?

16 y/o Corey Walgreen from Illinois committed suicide after police confronted him at his high school and WARNED him that he could be listed as a sex offender because of a recording on his phone of an alleged sexual encounter!!

He killed himself back in January soon after he was questioned that he had and shared "child pornography" as he had audio on his phone of consensual sexual encounter with a 16 y/o classmate and played it to his friends!!

While police didn't intend to press charges, the police wanted him to know the seriousness of his actions.

His devastated mother, Maureen Walgren said "i think they wanted to scare him straight. Instead, they scared him to death"

Corey was called into the office at Naperville North High School after a female classmate told a school dean that he had a recording of a sexual encounter they had before Christmas..

The police and the school principal gave him the sit down for 18 minutes and contacted his parents..

Maureen said the officer called her at work on LOUDSPEAKER while Corey was still in the room and said he was being investigated on child pornography and could be place on sex offender register.

The officer said the case could be dealt with via "station adjustement" meaning he could be reprimanded without being formally charged

Maureen said the cop was going to download his contents on his phone but needed her permission to do so and left immediately to the office.

Corey was an avid hockey player who had recently told his parents he had sex for the first time..but after his mother arrived, Corey was gone and she went immediately to look for him.

A short time later, Corey committed suicide after jumping from a 5 story parking garage..

His parents are now filing a lawsuit against the school and the police department stating her son's death could have been prevented.

Do you think the police were wrong in how they handled this?

Did you even read the article? They tried to help him for future cases and stated they weren't going to charge him. Heaven forbid the cops DONT charge someone and try to educate instead so the kid doesn't get hit with felony offenses.

This. Teachers, schools, and parents need to do a much better job of communicating to their kids about the dangers of transmitting data like this. It sucks that the kid decided to take the drastic action of killing himself, but that should not be on the administration or the police. The fact that he decided to kill himself instead of evaluating his behaviours and how to avoid it in the future speaks of deeper underlying issues.

Police handled it exactly as they should have. They have no choice but to follow the law and they gave him a chance since they knew it's fucked up that the kid would have to be arrested

did you? because the way it sounds, they didn't tell him they weren't going to press charges. instead they called his mom while he was still in the room and told her he could be charged with one of the worst things imaginable and placed on a sex offender registry, life-destroying consequences.

saying "oh well we weren't gonna actually charge him lol" after he runs away in fear and kills himself before his mom can even get there to talk to him is the worst possible way this could have been handled and resulted in death.

if they had actually told him, directly, that they weren't going to charge him and ruin his life i doubt he would have done something so extreme

"The officer said the case could be dealt with via "station adjustement" meaning he could be reprimanded without being formally charged"

Try again bro.

As to your first post, "holy shit a kid had sex" is not even close to the same as "hey, I had sex with a kid who recorded it without my knowledge and is spreading it around".

Ya, the victim is the one who brought it to the authorities attention..

Maybe try reading before responding?

yeah, because i'm sure a teenager is going to understand what "station adjustment" means in a conversation he's not even a part of after being threatened with being charged with child porn and being put on the sex offender registry, bro.

a teenager is dead. do you not realize that? he isn't dead for no reason. he is dead because of a mishandled situation.

The Tribune pieced together what happened to Corey through documents from police and the DuPage County coroner, obtained under the state Freedom of Information Act, as well as interviews with his parents, friends and others.

The police reports were heavily redacted and withheld all information about the confrontation at the high school less than two hours before Corey killed himself. The Tribune, though, obtained from other sources a less redacted copy of the police reports, including the report written by the officer who questioned the teen.

The DuPage County coroner released its report, which shows police described the case as a "child pornography" investigation.

It sounds like they tried to give him a break. I don't think anyone could be realistically expected to know that he would kill himself over this.

But looking at it objectively, he was a kid who recorded himself having sex with a girl, shared it with his friends, then decided he would rather die than possibly face any consequences

It's sad that he killed himself, and it's also sad that a teenager had her privacy violated and recorded having sex. I don't agree with the sex offender registry at all, but what he did was disgusting and he needed to be made aware of the consequences of his actions. It took two hours after the conversation for him to commit suicide - that isn't normal behavior, even for a teenager. Still, they should have held him at school until someone picked him up.

Real talk: The fact that minors can actually be forced to register as sex offenders for garbage like this has to be one of the dumbest loopholes in the legal system.

The sex offender registry exists to protect minors, not destroy their lives. "Child pornography" laws were developed at a time when cell phones barely existed. They were created at a time where child pornography was a legit problem with disgusting people actually manipulating children to act out awful things to be recorded on their bulky 1980's tape recorder in a controlled setting.

We live in a completely different era now. Not only does essentially every teenager now have a device that is capable of taking high resolution photos and videos at a moment's notice, but we even have applications like Snapchat and Instagram that indirectly (and by no means intentionally) encourage seductive behavior between ignorant young couples. Because the aforementioned laws haven't changed to account for this, there is now an overblown loophole where taking photos of YOURSELF if you are a MINOR could lead to being charged as an ADULT and having to register as a sex offender. That is absurdly mindblowing. And hypocritical.

This needs to be changed. While I don't think such behavior among minors should be encouraged by ANY means, it definitely shouldn't be something they can legally ruin their life over. They're KIDS. They don't know any better. Taking they're phone away for a couple months would be the proper punishment. Not putting their name on the sex offender registry.
