A professional big game hunter was reportedly crushed by an elephant while hunting in Zimbabwe.

According to Netwerk24, the hunter was identified as 51-year-old Theunis Botha of South Africa.

Netwerk24 was told by a source that a group of hunters, including Botha, fired on three charging elephant cows on Friday. A fourth cow was said to have lifted Botha with her trunk. And when that elephant was fatally shot by another hunter, it collapsed on Botha.

Botha was a pioneer of Monteira hunting, in which packs of dogs are deployed to chase deer and boar towards hunters. Netwerk24 reported that he recruited wealthy Americans to participate in his hunts.

“Mr. Botha was a highly regarded houndsman and frequently led leopard and lion hunting safaris with his pack of dogs,” the Telegraph reported.

I'm sure there's some underlining justification which makes his profession ethical, but it's difficult to feel too broken up about a guy who goes around shooting animals that likely aren't fit to eat.

It's shitty, but it's the best system in place to protect those animals from poachers.

I never wish for the deaths of other humans and I feel bad for any family or friends he had that will undoubtedly be devastated by this loss. That said, when your job involves shooting at large and dangerous animals, it's a bit hard for me feel too bad when large, dangerous animals behave dangerously.

this is true, there's nothing you can harvest from an elephant minus the tusks but they're endangered so that is a bad trade-off.

hunting to reduce population of deer or elk that will most likely starve without intervention is a far better option, at least most of the parts can be used.

Once an animal is too old and out of the breeding population, they can be a danger to younger animals. Selling off hunting rights allows game wardens to take them out while bringing in income to protect and manage the land.
