Haven't played it myself, but I've watched a stream series of two guys completing the game. If you like the idea of building really intricate conveyor belt, power, and manufacturing systems that all flow back and for into one another, then it's the game for you. In fact, that is pretty much the entire game from what I saw. There are aliens and combat, but it's not the focus by a long shot.

I would in no way compare it to Civ or Crusader Kings.

....that sounds kind of bad. It has overwhelmingly positive rating though, so it has to be good, right?

I know about The Incredible Machine in name only, so I couldn't tell you if they're similar. It's rated highly because for what it does, it does extremely well. If you want a game where you build a manufacturing system and tinker with it until it flows perfectly, this is the game for you. If you find that idea boring, you probably shouldn't buy this game.

I will say that this stream I watched was about a year ago. Probably been updates since then, but I can't imagine they shift the focus of the gameplay so much that my advice is wrong.
