Nobody knew what TMZ was and didn't believe it.

That scoop singlehandedly made TMZ the defacto celebrity news HQ after it was reported that Michael Jackson was indeed dead.

They also got the Ray Rice tapes that everybody in the NFL pretended didn't exist

TMZ was popular way before that. The turning point was the Mel Gibson tirade thing.

TMZ was super popular before that. Especially during the Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie, Lohan and Spears party years in the mid 2000s

I heard of them but IIRC before that they were considered an enquirer lite

Doing what a reporter that works for an editorial that specializes in celebrity gossip should be doing?

TMZ was well-known and super obnoxious well before MJ. Pretty sure they didn't have any popularity problems prior to Michael.

TMZ was popular for celebrity gossip and nonsense...no one even considered it as a legitimate site for news like MJ's death until that day. it was like "yea, that's the site i go to when i wanna see videos of a drunk celebrity yelling at someone"...now its "OH SHIT <celebrity> died?....let me read up on that on TMZ"

Nah. they were definitely well known. Most people just kind of thought of them as professional paparazzi, though.

The police report that was released thoroughly described everything that happened in the video, so we all knew exactly what happened. Apparently it's ok as long as we don't see it happen.

yeah TMZ was know for more Britney Spears hitting cars with umbrellas or paparazzi following Paris Hilton at the time. When celebrities dies back then you needed CNN to confirm it.

People knew what TMZ was but as has been said several times, it was seen more like a "classy" version of the National Enquirer or Exclaimer. They usually focused on celebrities going batshit rather than actual "celebrity news".

Yeah, people knew what TMZ was, but IIRC that was the first time I ever saw the "Has CNN confirmed it" meme on CE. That may have been around before too.
