Wind Waker, TP, and BotW.

There are some "console only" listings that just have a wiimote or something. I've never had a Wii U before, do I need the tablet with it?

Console is basically unusable without the tablet

You need it to get in the settings menu, at least

It comes with it. You can't buy a wii u and not have a gamepad. You can play those games with the pro controller though

It will be almost the same price to buy a Nintendo Switch and Zelda than it will be to buy the dead Wii U and Zelda.

But I can't play old games on switch, right? Switch has no games...

IIRC the virtual console isn't up yet, so if you own a switch you're looking at Zelda, Mario kart, and nothing else. I'd gets Wii u if you can find it cheap.

The tablet controller will come with any new Wii U. It's required for certain menus and I wouldn't buy on without it (even though I strongly prefer the pro controller).

For the Zelda games.... In TP the tablet controller can be used to quickly access your inventory or map. It also provides and extra touch screen button to quickly transform that isn't available on other controllers.

In BotW, the motion controls of the tablet are required for a handful of Shrines. Other than that you're good with the pro controller. Nothing is available on the touch-screen screen like inventory or maps, so you can pretty much get by without the tablet.

I can't comment on WW cause I never played on the Wii U, but I imagine the touch screen has quick access to inventory or maps like TP.

I expect we will see a lot of ports of Wii U games as many of them didn't really get a chance to sell like they should.

Is there something in particular you really wanted to play right now only on Wii U?

Switch has "no games" right now, but Splatoon 2 is coming very soon making Splatoon 1 obsolete, MK8D makes MK8 obsolete, You know there will be a new Smash, so Smash 4 Wii U probably just a waste of money at this point. I expect we'll see lots of ports of things like SM3DW which never really got a chance to sell like they should have sold because of low Wii U sales especially since those can be churned out faster to compensate for lack of games.

Switch literally already has better versions of the two best games on Wii U

My plan was to get a Wii U with:

BotW (50+ hours?)
Skyward Sword (40-50 hours?)
Xenoblade Chronicles (50+ hours?)
Twilight Princess (40 hours?)

So the switch virtual console will arrive at like christmastime? Then the games I want will trickle in the following years? I can get a Wii U for 150 bucks and the games for like 10 bucks, and I've never played any of them

PS would I like XC if I don't like most JRPGs? Is it more like KOTOR or what kind of game is it?

I don't like multiplayer games, just long singleplayer, so most Switch games don't appeal to me

The closest Western game like it would be Guild Wars, The combat is very MMOish, but the game overall is very exploration based. It is not like KOTOR which is a light port of tabletop RPG mechanics. You should play the original Xenoblade Chronicles first though.

EDIT: sorry if you were already asking about Xenoblade Chronicles (original) and not Xenoblade Chronicles X. But the same still stands as far as gameplay, X is very story light compared to original.

The Wii one is the original, right? That's the one I meant. I heard the Wii U version has a lot of grinding and fetch quests

Sounds like XC is for you. It's only $20 on the eshop too. Xenoblade Chronicles X is pretty good as well. And you can't go wrong with the Virtual Console in general.

Yes, 'Xenoblade Chronicles' is the wii game. Chronicles X is the Wii U one and it is unrelated to the original other than being a spiritual successor, its still a very good game but it falls short of the bar set by the original. Xenoblade Chronicles was the best JRPG of last generation.
