And you know, I just noticed that unless I don't know how to spell "succession" it's actually a "c" short.

Still, my most scathing remark is how all the party members except for the couple are absolutely unimportant in any way and don't get a character arc at all. Xenogears had the same problem, but at least every character had a fleshed-out recruitment arc.

Also in Xenogears, it's less of a problem. Fei, Elly, Citan, Bart and Emeralda all had decent story arcs, even though Emeralda's is kinda short by virtue of being a last-second addition to the party. Though you do still have Rico, Maria, Billy and Chuchu but that's less than half the party instead of two thirds of it.

Granted, Emeralda's optional side quest gives you some of the best scenes in the game.

9 ( = Tactics) > 8 = 7 imo

Disc 1 sets up the setting really nicely and is full of great moments.

But then it kinda just becomes ehh.

7 > 9 > 8 > never made it very far in tactics its on my todo list so i cant really rate it fairly since i only played an hour into it

I played 7 for the first time in probably 15 years, right before this last completion of 8. And I'll say that I was never huge on 7 originally, I thought it was ok but really overrated. This playthrough I really enjoyed replaying it and had a blast with it. I remember on my first playthrough of 8, thinking that it didn't deserve the hate it deserved. On this last playthrough, I can certainly understand it's flaws and why people don't like it. I didn't hate the game and it was enjoyable as a game, but for me nowhere near as good as 8. The only thing 8 has on it, as someone else said, is graphics.

Next I'm going to play 9, which is another one I probably haven't played in 15 years. Looking forward to this one because I always liked 9.

9 was a mixed blessing to me

on one hand it did a nice job of bringing back fear in encounters, boss fights where i actually was concerned i might lose

on the other, it did so by stripping away a lot of the options to enhance my characters. materia in 7 could be developed to make an unstoppable god party but it also could be used to just provide some options and a normal progression through the game without grinidng wouldve resulted in everything being challenging 'enough' and skills like KOTR wouldnt have been used at all

8 was done similarly in that regard, but the draw system was just bad.

If you are willing to grind a good RPG should let you get overleveled. If you just went from A to B, 7 was a decent challenge but you grind a little if gets easy quickly.
