I am having trouble articulating what exactly I want, and I suspect I don't really mean "unfolding" games even though I like them. I like games that have a few different games going on within them- where they all play differently, could probably all be standalone games on some level, and progress in one can help in another.

For some reason, the best examples I can think of are obscure idle or freemium games:
-Anti-Idle is where I first got hooked on the idea. There's the main idle portion with RPG elements, but there's also an abundance of mini-games, most of which are complex enough to be interesting on their own.
-I THINK Candy Box did this, but I don't remember clearly.
-Frog Fractions, if you went back and forth between things instead of progressing through them in sequence.
-I'm playing Gumballs and Dungeons right now, and it's basically two different gatcha RPG's at once, with an idle game framework around both. There's a dungeon crawl one that is more RPG-ish, and also an airship one that has more PVP, but either one can give you items that you can use in the other, and leveling up your dudes helps on both ends.
-I used to play a browser-based game called Billy Vs. Snakeman where you could spend your daily energy in many different ways, using a variety of resources and stats and mechanics.
-I used to play a phone game called Taptitude that was a collection of a few dozen mini-games...in which you could win items in one game to help with others.
-Sandcastle Builder and Kittens both did this a bit- both never really deviated from "idle game" but you had different resources over time and did slightly different things with them....but you still wanted to keep up with your basic resources even while you did advanced resource things.

I feel like a lot of mainstream games have, like, ONE extra thing, like the Sonic games with Chao, or Triple Triad and the like. But I want games where there are SEVERAL of those, and it might even be hard to pin down which one is the "main" game.

Am I making any sense? Any hot recs?

I've heard that Trauma Team for the Wii is sort of like this, but I haven't played it myself.

The Misadventures of Tron Bonne is like this, as the stages are divided into three types with completely different control schemes and objectives.

It's also worth playing regardless, and it's on PSN now so you don't have pay hundreds of dollars for a physical copy.

Yeah! I would like a FEW more modules than that but you do have to balance dungeoning with socializing, and fusion is almost cool enough to count as a separate thing too.

I also thought of Rune Factory/Harvest Moon. I shall investigate the others!

To some degree, the original Digimon World is this. Have to balance your time between training your partner, exploring the island to expand your town, keeping track of your schedule so you don't miss time-specific events, earning money, battle tournaments, etc

You brought up Sonic and the Chao but stopped there. Sonic Adventure is pretty much that type of game, each character has their own completely different playstyle.

Not sure it really counts seeing as its "main" game is very clearly a beat-em-up, but the Yakuza series has so many different types of gameplay packed into it through its sidequests, minigames and other gameplay segments that at one point or another it's encompassed every genre I could name.
