I'll be honest, I've never actually played any Banjo games (hoping to change that in the near future), so I'm curious if the levels in those games are as confusing as the ones here.

Seriously, it just plops you down in the world and it's just a mess of shit that really gives you no inkling of where to start.

Genuine question: Is this just that "classic 3D platformer" feel, or is it one of the reasons Yooka-Laylee's been getting middling reviews?

I picked up yooka laylee and played through the first world before stopping. I think it is probably very similar to banjo(never played any of the games) but there's less world's which are more dense so it's more confusing.

I just finished F-Zero X Master difficulty with all 30 characters.

On topic, I watched Jim Sterling's video on this and I gotta say it certainly has Banjo Kazooie elements.

Have you played YL? Don't turn this into a "hurr kids today don't want to think" discussion. The levels are (IMO) cluttered and confusing to navigate.

Well kudos, I guess.

I personally find the levels cumbersome and tedious at times to traverse, and I don't think I'm alone, considering the reviews the game's been getting.

i don't see what's so confusing?

you explore, you find challenges as you find them.

there's no order, no need for direction, and there are 20-some challenges per level so it shouldn't be hard to find them. you don't need to be told "where to start"--you can start anywhere

Not sure bout Kazooie, but Tooie had some levels like that. Mainly Terrydacty land (the worst level), Jolly Roger lagoon, and sorta Glitter Gulch mine

I don't really enjoy the exploring part too much. I feel that, with the way the levels are designed, it's overly difficult to keep track of where you've been and what other areas are open to exploring. And I'm not even asking for like a minimap or anything like that, just some way to better make heads or tails of whichever world you're in.

I backed Yooka-Laylee and have a Steam copy but I have no desire to play it at all. It sounds worse than the 3D platformers from 20 years ago.

I was a backer which is the reason I have it and am currently playing it.

Can't say I'd have picked it up otherwise.

it's much more like Kazooie, idk what TC's issue is

Every level is just a collection of self-contained challenges, not like Tooie where you had to traverse between worlds just to get one Jiggy

I heard there's not even like a task list or journal. So if you leave something for later you might not even remember what you're supposed to do.

I think they misunderstood what makes a lot of these retro throwbacks good. The good ones aren't literally exact copies of the old games with no improvements.

I thought you had to go back to worlds after they expand?

That was another criticism I read. That it's not clear if you're able to get to certain areas or not yet. That wasn't in the original BK at all.

But really, I agree with you. Some kind of polish to bring it up to today's standards would have done wonders, IMO. I don't see what GoldenEel's post has to do with wanting better designed levels.

That's like 90% of the gameplay though.

Honestly, no insult or disrespect intended, this game doesn't sound like a good match for you.

I mean, maybe it's not, but what I really meant there was that I'm not enjoying it in YL as a result of the level design. Exploring can be a blast... if the levels are fun to do said exploring.

tbh that is a valid criticism. but it costs so few Pagies to expand worlds that you'll probably have enough to expand them all by the time you get to them

after the first world (which only costs three total pagies to unlock and expand) i never even entered a level until i had fully expanded it

That's pretty much how a lot of the worlds in Kazooie and Tooie were. Plopped right into a level and you just have to explore yourself.
