I'd say my curriculum was pretty good at that, but it was because it focused on how to get you to think like a programmer rather than just tell you how to program in one language

I'm in a PHP Developers group on Facebook. All the time I see basic questions being asked where they clearly didn't even try and solve on their own. I also have observed that many people are taught to use md5 for passwords when it even says in official documentation site that it should not be used for passwords. I never went to school for learning PHP; I'm all self taught and probably better than someone fresh out of college for it.
