I put a rub all over the butt and then covered the butt in bbq sauce so it was like smothered in this mix of rub and sauce and let it marinade like that for almost a whole day (got the butt in the afternoon and let it sit there until the following morning). I do notice that for other people who make it, if it's not thoroughly seasoned / sauced, it ends up having kind of a bland flavor. A lot of bulk BBQ places will compensate for this by adding sauce after it's been pulled but it never ends up tasting as good as if you properly prepared it ahead of time. --- ... It would take a few days at least, i know when curing a ham it's more than an overnighter. Legit 3 days or so.
