If you're able to do like 450 pounds, except your hands keep sliding, straps are great because you miss out on so much development + growth from heavy deadlifts by letting your grip limit you. Straps need some getting used to, I felt the same as you with them at first. My gum eventually allowed chalk though and that's infinitely better haha.
