As long as the coach lists the player as active, there would be no problem, right? Let's say Steph Curry wanted to buy a new car before the game. Could he miss the 1st half and then play in the 2nd?

I don't believe so. I think they take tabs before the game starts.

Don't know if the rules have changed since then, but back in 96 Shaq arrived mid-game and was allowed to play.

Yea.
After being away from the team for about a week after he found out his less than 1 year old daughter had cancer behind her eye, Derek Fisher returned. He flew in from New York where his daughter had surgery that very morning, got a police escort to the arena, put on his uniform, and without warming up at all, Fisher entered the game. --- ...
