What kind of job is this where you can't request vacation time?

On a side note, I work in nursing homes and years ago the administrator of my building was on a cruise when the state came in for an inspection and the owner fired her when she got back because she didn't fly home early. She was old enough to retire anyway

It would depend on the circumstance. If you're just insistent on taking your vacation exactly when you want and are neglecting the business/not being flexible with other people's scheduled time off---then that statement could be more understandable.

But if you've been told that for absolutely no reason, it sounds like a pretty crappy company and I'd definitely be looking to get a new one quickly. If I had the money to live on, I'd probably just go on vacation and get fired. If I didn't, I'd not take a vacation but find another company as soon as possible.

That's fucking bullshit. Shes on a damn cruise. How you gonna make someone pay for a cruise and then pay for a plane ticket to miss the cruise to come back when the inspection will happen if she is there or not.

it's in the contract. the whole building can get shut down if you fail that inspection so the person in charge has to be there

I guess it depends on if I needed the job or the vacation more.

In real life, I have a vacation coming up in May. I casually brought it up to my manage a few weeks back and she mentioned that she hadn't made up the May schedule yet. So, they just marked on the calendar that I'd be away for those four days. Granted, two of those days are on a weekend, so they're really only losing me on a Friday and Monday.

we kinda know ahead of time when they'll be coming but it can be anywhere in a 3-9 month period depending on how long they take with other buildings

Do what my mom did. She had a vacation planned and approved, and like a couple days before her vacation date they said she couldn't go after they found out what it was for (religious reasons). She let them know that she's going to take it anyway and if they didn't like it, that she was going to take it straight to HR. They let her take it and she still had her job when she came back.

So...if you're doing things right and they still won't let you take vacation even if you're well entitled to, just threaten them with HR or the BBB. They'll comply.
