Reason?

I'll try to keep this short:

I have worked in a call center before, so I was very reluctant to do this new job. It was for a real estate company. Not actually selling homes, but calling home owners trying to recommend an agent that fits their needs. It's a very good business model, but not what I thought it was going to be. At the end of training (which by the way was only a week), they told me I would also be cold calling existing home owners and trying to get them to sell their property. Cool, thanks for letting me know right before I start my actual job.

When I got on the phones, it was brutal. Customers were unbelievably nasty to me (for a good reason), the call volume was unbelievable high (150-200 calls a day) and we had to memorize 10+ pages worth of scripts. Even the call center I worked at before didn't have scripts, they actually tried to develop you into being a better sales agent.

Well anyway, on day #2 of being on the phones, I told my manager I hated my job. He went over to his own manager and reported it, and then that manager fired me on the spot. It was pretty funny because it was done in front of everyone, not the normal business way. I also packed up my own stuff lol.

So definitely fair, next, although the job was pretty bad.

It definitely was a good business model. The CEO told me he had a bad experience with selling his home, so he started up the company to assign the right real estate agents to the right homes. But the execution on the employee side could be better. Sure, if I can't do the job they will find someone who can, but my point is that maybe if they had better training and more leeway, they would retain more employees. But maybe that isn't what they're going for.

What would you consider a sane call center call flow? Where I'm at, I usually get anywhere between 20-40 calls a day, though thankfully we don't do outbound calls.

In general, these things make an alright call center:

- More time in between calls, like 2 or 3 minutes
- More breaks, if that person is meeting the job requirements
- Less numbers. Call centers are all about the numbers. That should change
- If it's a sales call center, just make the rules on offering a little more lenient. This is where companies get really greedy

I'm not a business dude so I'm not saying these changes will make call centers more or less profitable, I'm just telling you what things would make me more willing to work in a call center.

That's rough shit for twelve bucks an hour. My job at 16.50 as an accounting clerk is a lot better than trying to call 150 people a day to sell their homes.

Maybe it's different in other states but in PA you and your employer pay for your unemployment. It's not welfare, refusing to take it is pretty dumb. I made $13,000 just from unemployment last year because I make enough to get max pa benefits. Almost $600 a week which isn't terrible

True. Or maybe that extra break time will give smokers that smoke-break they really need so that they don't quit on impulse.

You are absolutely right, but they should care about that kind of stuff. That is why I don't want to work in a call center again, I was reluctant on taking this job from the start.

They don't care because there isn't really a reason to care tbh. Most of these call center jobs the employees are basically replaceable with people on the street.

Yeah man but the level of "caring" is usually reflected by the wage. If they're giving you $10 an hour it's probably not a high skilled job where they are concerned about employee retention. They don't care because these kinds of jobs are basically low skilled with high turnover (both from firings and resignations). The nature of the job isn't intended for long-term employment.

I think the lesson learned is to consider the interview two way. If you realize you won't like the job you can just say no and end it right there.

I have gone into an interview where I realized it wasn't right for me. I thanked the person for their time and left to look for something better.

I learned a lot of great things from my previous call center job, and I'm glad I worked there. But like you said, it's not meant for long term employment. Just get the experience and then get out.
