You will never have a tablet that's as powerful as a laptop. Except for the Microsoft Surface, which is a laptop with a keyboard that you can detach

At 64GB of memory, they're not going to do much if they keep that up. And paying 500+ bucks for a mere tablet that comes with 128GB is a mockery.

4 years for what? and because it seems like all manufacturers are ignoring laptops, in favor of trying to push tablets, i'm not saying they're bad, I have 4 of them, but I also have 2 laptops

4 years since the ipad. Laptops don't need to advance further. They have sufficient performance for anything you need on the go. IF anything more is necessary then a desktop will fill the role better.

Tablets have a separate niche, and could certainly use more refining.

Lol

It's true though. You'l never see anybody using tablets but kids playing games on them in this modern age. Most people just use a combination of their smartphone and a laptop

Tablets just need to one day forgo the fancy UI and flashy stuff, they could have great real-world applications.

Smart technology in general, where all technology can just interact with each other in intuitive and ergonomic ways, is definitely the way of the future. When you'll be able to take a picture of food with your laptop and it calculates how many calories are in it, then you turn around and control your TV with it

Shit like that - that's the future of tablets and shit

I mean Apple enforces design specific for iPad, but Android doesn't, and most companies I know simply stopped developing for a tablet version unless it was made specifically for it. Just not worth the time

Maybe for personal use but honestly the idea of using a tablet as a server or putting a thousand tablets inside a car is just laughable.

my theory is that the general public has learned that tablets are more or less entirely useless gimmick devices that are only good for browsing facebook or watching netflix, and not something you can do any actual productive work on, like a laptop. why waste money on a tablet when your phone is like 3 inches smaller than one, has 4G, etc?

manufacturers are aware of this and are trying to bust into this market of people who like tablets for stupid shit but want to do actual work, and here is where the Surface / iPad Pros / Samsung Galaxy Book / etc are all coming in. i think this will be the future, once the prices are low enough for these and someone makes something to rival the surface, which is the clear best choice because it runs windows, has usb ports, etc

Tablets are losing ground to phones and phablets. They still have a lot of use, especially commercially.

My nephew now hates his tablet - ipad or whatever the hell it's called after seeing all that my PC can do in comparison.

Tried to use it myself and wondered where I could plug a 30" monitor or keyboard in.

Told him that a kick ass laptop are pretty much the same but portable and still can be used kind of like a desktop.

I can't figure out what I would use a tablet for. I don't like mobile games and I already have a smartphone and laptop.

My dad has one, which he uses to browse the internet, play solitaire, read books, and put up recipes. I guess being a nice sized device for reading is probably the appeal, but I don't read much or cook.

I think Bok put it pretty nicely earlier. Tablets are starting to find their niche. Of course they don't compare to laptops for the things laptops are good at.
Me I'm really happy with my IPad for reading papers and watching Netflix, as well as taking notes etc. I can do literature searches on my laptop and sync my Mendeley database with the tablet. Extremely convenient imo, an upgrade from my laptop. But I'm mostly anticipating people finding other uses, like controlling stuff in industry environments, handling payments in stores, controlling smart homes, etc. All sorts of tasks that only require some web app.

Yeah, the commercial applications turned out to be great. Who knew having ready made, reliable touch screens would be such a boon?

I would not give up my laptop for a tablet, but having one in addition to a laptop is fine and can be used for certain tasks that it may be equally or more effective at doing than my laptop.

The only way I could see tablets becoming huge is either a) making them so similar to laptops that I'm not sure the difference would even matter or b) cloud storage became the norm and so things like 64GB hard drive would be of less consequence, but even then that direction seems questionable to me.
