"Adults who have at least one diet drink a day are three times more at risk from a stroke or dementia, research shows today."

"In this latest study - published in the American Heart Association's journal Stroke - researchers looked at 4,372 adults over the age of 45.
They had filled in detailed questionnaires on their food and drink intake in the 1990s and were then tracked for ten years."

"The researchers are still not sure whether diet drinks are causing strokes or dementia – or whether those who consume them are at higher risk anyway."

Maybe. But I would argue if you aren't a large sugar consumer to begin with, it would probably be better to err on the side of caution and choose to consume something natural versus artificial chemicals produced in a laboratory.

That's what I have been telling people about concerning the dangers of those diet drinks for years, though they said that was a conspiracy theory.

Anyway, so there you go, I guess, if CNN says it it must finally be legit.

I'll be honest, most of the people I see drinking diet sodas are the "Well look I'm saving calories so I can order anything I want but it's okay because of the diet soda" people.

I know it's a negative stereotype, but it seems to hold true from what I've seen.

Aspartame technically isn't an essential amino acid, but it's derived from one.

Don't read too much into this. I'm just sharing a study. And don't criticize me on what I choose to ingest into my body. I happen to not be very fond of sweets and don't drink too much soda, also Diet soda to me does taste awful and fake. I don't think sugar is a major risk for most people if consumed reasonably---certainly not more than anything else we decide to shove down our throats.

I'm just posting an article. More research should be done.

It's derived from two. It's two Amino acids bonded together and it just so happens that it ends up tasting sweet. when it breaks down in your body, it breaks down as the normal amino acids that it's made from.

37g of added sugars per days is considered "reasonable"/safe.

That's less than a single can of coke. And WAY less than most Americans consume each day total.

You mean Phenylalanine? The essential amino acid that you need in order to continue living? Then the answer is no. I mean they have it, but it doesn't cause cancer. It's essential to life.

That's good to know, I didn't realize the threshold was so low.

Do you know any other items people regularly over consume that are above what is considered reasonably safe (besides straight up calorie consumption, that's a given)?

There are some meals you can get that contain more calories than an entire day's worth of food. Chipolte is a huge offender of this with their gigantic burritos.

a regular soda, burrito (with carnitas, rice, pinto beans, cheese, sour cream, and guacamole) and chips at Chipolte comes out to more than 2000 calories.

Caffeine probably. 300-400mg is considered safe to not experience the harmful side-effects, and just the other day a lot of people on CE seemed to think 600-1000mg was fine.

That's crazy, I have a hard time believing that. Beans and rice seem to make up a large part of the burritos and those two items don't contain much calories. Guacamole I'm not so sure about. It would seem the biggest contributors would be the dough, meat, and cheese (and sour cream being the last, not considering rice or beans)
