The Master System and Game Gear have the same hardware specs, but the cartridges aren't interchangeable.

GameGear is based on the Master System hardware and got more colors, sound channels, and a smaller resolution.
Because of these extra functions, GameGear games cant be played natively on a Master System or a Genesis. You can find patches online that converts GameGear roms into Master System compatible software, but then you need a flashcard to play them.
Your other option is to get a GameGear and mod it with one of many TV Out options that you can find with Google.
I think some GameGear games are sold as VC titles on Wii U.
The last option is... using an emulator. On PC or on a modded console, like the Wii or original Xbox.

^i looked up how to do that. i say hell no. i would need to buy two gamegears just in case i screw up. i would rather buy a rasberry pi and emulate the games i already own. I can make a switch verison of the game gear with the raspberry pi.

There is a massive passthrough cartridge to allow Master System games to be played on the Game Gear. Unsure how it changes the resolution on games though.

I am only assuming that the limited resolution and cartridge size was due to battery or cost.

Of course, Sega threw this all out the window with the Nomad, which is not even a seperate handheld system, but only a portable version of the Sega Genesis (minus the 32X and CD support).

You can play Game Gear games through a Master System. Sega made a converter cartridge. You may be able to use the Game Gear converter, into a Master System Converter that plugs into a Genesis but it is probably just easier to get a Master System with a Game Gear converter cart. You can mod them to output onto a TV but that is a pretty big mod.

You sure about that? I've never heard of one, and from what I've found, there never was one made.

Its seems from a couple of searches that there is the master gear converter which does SMS to Gamegear.

Going the other way there seem to be some hobby projects going around but nothing commercial.
