It's hard to say, but there's obviously a lot of backstory at this point. Not sure if they're going to make the Boruto series hold up on its own or if they'll repeatedly refer to stuff from the Naruto series.

After giving it some thought, it'd be better to watch or read Naruto first. If you watch the anime, make sure you skip the fillers.
