Police investigating explosions beside a bus carrying the German football team Borussia Dortmund are looking into a possible Islamic extremist motive behind the attack.

Citing security circles, the newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung said a written document found near the site of Tuesday night’s blasts referred to the attack on a Berlin Christmas market last year and claimed that German fighter jets were involved in killing Muslims in the Isis “caliphate”.

The German chancellor, Angela Merkel, expressed dismay at the attack via her spokesman.

“Last night the chancellor was, like people in Dortmund, like millions everywhere, appalled by the attack on the BVB team bus,” Steffen Seibert told journalists in Berlin. He added that investigators were doing everything to trace those responsible and expressed relief that the outcome was not worse.

A statement claiming responsibility for the attack reportedly starts with a reference to “Allah, the most beneficent, the most merciful” and states that sports personalities and celebrities belonging to “Germany and other crusading nations” were on Isis’s “kill list”.

However, investigators cited by Süddeutsche Zeitung said they were also looking into the possibility that the document was a false trail deliberately laid by another perpetrator.

But other motives are not being ruled out.

A suspect was arrested.

An Islamist suspect has been arrested over three explosions that rocked the Borussia Dortmund football team bus, prosecutors have revealed as they confirmed the investigation was examining a possible "terrorist link".

Investigators said that two alleged Islamic extremists are the focus of the attack probe and that one has been detained following searches of their apartments.

A letter found at the scene "in the name of Allah", which claims responsibility and reportedly referred to the Berlin Christmas market attack, makes an "Islamic extremist motive possible", they confirmed.

"Two suspects from the Islamist spectrum have become the focus of our investigation, said lead prosecutor Frauke Koehle on Wednesday afternoon. "Both of their apartments were searched, and one of the two has been detained."

So the explosive used may have been of military origin:

The newspaper "Welt am Sonntag" cited a source involved in the investigation as saying supplies belonging to the German military may have been used to make the explosives used in last Tuesday's attack.
"The explosives in the pipe bombs, which were filled with metal pins, might have come from the stocks of the German armed forces, but that's still being checked," the paper reported on Saturday.
The source also said that specialist knowledge was required to use the military detonators, which are not easy to get.

"Welt am Sonntag" said police believe further attacks are possible and that soccer games, rock concerts and cultural events are particularly at risk.
The German Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) would not confirm the latest report, saying that all lines of inquiry are being examined regarding the attack, which occurred as the bus left the team's hotel for a Champions League match against Monaco. The match was postponed for 24 hours.
