it was kind of a shitty turnout, not a lot of teams showed up this year. So half the champions won by walkover. And I only had one fight in my bracket, so winning one fight makes me state champ lol.

It was a slaughter.

i think some world champions have started even later. I think its only too late if you're passed your physical prime. But a few years will get you some solid skills at least. I'd say if you enjoy the sport, just do it.

Wow, just you telling me that is very motivating. Are you trying to be pro? I definitely love the sport, I try watching boxing whenever it's on (Lomachenko this Saturday).

How old are you now btw? When you first began, did you hire a trainer or was it more like a class? I'd definitely have a lot more questions, haha.

Man, I will be so dedicated that I would need someone just as dedicated as I am. I'm getting hype.

i'm 24.
somewhat long story about how I started:
i tried starting at 16 with PAL boxing but only did it for a year. Then I moved out of state

I was about 30 lbs overweight at 155 lbs at 21 years old. So I went to a chain UFC gym and did some cardio boxing first to lose the weight. Then I went a real local boxing gym, Johnny Tapia's boxing gym (Team Tapia) in New Mexico and met the trainers there and started training. After about a year training there, gym closed down due to some family drama, and Johnny Tapia's brother in law took me as his boxer and started training me and this heavy weight privately at some free community gym

Which was bad because he was kind of crazy and was a drug addict (think christian bale's character in The Fighter) So one of the other coaches from Team Tapia opened a new gym and invited me to spar there. Ended up joining his gym instead, and have been there for two years.

I only have 5 fights, I don't plan on making this my primary income if I ever go pro(im a college student), but I do plan on going pro for the challenge of it. I want to win at least an amateur national or world title before I take a pro fight, and 50 fights at the least.

This. It's like watching children fight at that weight. I sparred with a Thai guy about that size (he had a fight coming up and they wanted him to get harder). I felt like I was assaulting a child. He was fast but his punches and kicks didn't even hurt me and he was going full power (he's a damn good fighter as well, over 100 pro fights at 18 and 90% of those are wins). While he was better technically than me and faster, I'd buckle him over with a single body kick. Knocked him flat on his face with one leg kick that he even managed to check (I was only going at about 60% as well). When he would try to clinch, he'd get tossed around like I was throwing a toddler.

I literally live and train Muay Thai in Thailand. Have had 2 pro fights here including one where I broke my leg but still managed to win. Thai males on average are like 5'3" 120lbs. Most of my training partners are Thai unless we happen to have another foreigner training there (in the north it was 50/50 Thai/foreigner, in the south where I live now, I've seen one other foreigner ever train at my gyn and it was for about a week).

That's a pretty interesting story. How did you know then that you were a....featherweight right? How did you know that was your ideal weight? I'm located in NY, so I know there's a couple of boxing gyms around. I would just have to find the right one. As you were in the beginning though, I'm a bit overweight (already in the process of losing it), but I'm not sure what my ideal weight would be. I feel like 154lbs might be it because I hovered around 152lbs for a long time...honestly not sure though.

whats your height?

i feel like your ideal weight comes naturally. But your height has to do with it. i'm 5'6ish. So if i go up to 140 then i'd be fighting much taller guys. Even 130 is pushing it. But 130 is the weight where I can use most my power. 125 is the sweet spot and the point where I overpower my opponents.

anything below 120 i feel a bit weaker.

i've made bigger guys quit

depends on their stamina and skill level though. Obviously I'm never going to fight you since you're at a heavier weight class. But you can't disrespect a lighter weight class. There's a reason why people love to watch Manny Pacquiao and Marquez.

Current favorites: Thurman because of his wisdom and ring IQ
Pacquiao cause hes literally a living legend at the moment thats still in the boxing game
(also I tend to have his same stance and style (other than him being southpaw))
Chocolatito
Conello
Triple G
Mayweather: He's a defensive genius, nuff said. Also I emulate his shoulder roll and right hand counter. I've broken someone's nose by using that.

Old favorites: Mike Tyson, I get a lot of power techniques from tyson. and a lot of his defensive techniques kind of reflect on mine. My coach describes my style like pacquiao but my solid defense and power comes from emulating tyson. His coach, Cus D'Amato is probably my favorite coach of all time.

Muhammad Ali: Im actually not too crazy about his style other than his footwork. Because his style is so dependent on his body type. That style wont work for me because I'm not tall at all. But he's my favorite because of his character and persistence.

Julio Cesar Chavez: His record speaks for itself.

You've made guys who are bigger than 6' 235lbs quit? I'd take your head off in a boxing match even though my low kicks and knees are my best weapons. Having a 4" height and 30lb size advantage on a pro Muay Thai fighter with well over 100 fights proved to be too much for him (while being my first fight). I'd have 6 inches and over 100lbs on you, as soon as you'd try to close the distance you'd be eating an uppercut that'll put you on your ass.

Sure, smaller guys have and do beat much larger guys but that usually requires a massive skill gap. If the fighters are even remotely on similar levels the larger fighter almost always wins. Put Pacquiao in his prime against any top 20 180-200lb fighter and he'd get killed.

Oh, come on. You of all people should know that fighters cut weight to fight in lower weight classes. Tyron Woodley probably walks around at 195 solid, but he still cuts drastically to fight as champion at 170.

At the highest levels of combat sports, sure. But the majority of fighters from amateur to the lower level pro leagues aren't cutting 25lbs to make weight. More like 8 to 10. Hell, look at Mighty Mouse. Best 125lb fighter to ever live but he still looks like a child. He'd kick my ass of course but that comes from the skill gap I mentioned earlier. Any WW, MW, LHW or HW that's a top 50 fighter would kill him because the skill gap is decreased making the size difference more noticeable.

Chocolatito had a very engaging fight recently, unfortunately lost, but I enjoyed the match. I love Triple G, but I can't like Canelo because of the whole catchweight thing. With Mayweather, it's funny. I used to be a hater. I remember when I wanted De La Hoya to win, Hatton. When they both lose I thought Cotto could beat him, thought Maidana might with the way he was going at it, but at the same time I was becoming a fan. All the boxers I thought could win, lost. I'm definitely a fan now, his defense was just not able to be penetrated. In a sport where the other man's job is to hit you, that's super impressive. I'm also really starting to like Terrence Crawford as well.

Mike Tyson will always be a legend in my eyes. He was unstoppable at his prime and so quick for a heavyweight. I haven't watched a lot of Ali fights, but I know his history. Another oldie I like is Sugar Ray Leonard.

what's funny is that I stood in line behind Terrence Crawford at the Ringside world tournament in kansas during the weigh ins and I didn't know it was him until someone pointed him out to me lol.

TC is neither tall nor heavy framed, so I agree he probably does not cut a huge amount to get to his fighting weight. At any rate, the point is that fighters end up in their respective weight classes to approximate a level playing field. All fighters know this, so it's always strange to me when someone downplays another fighter's size or capabilities from a different weight class. You're really only supposed to be graded against your weight class peers (or in a pound per pound sense), and everyone is a pipsqueak standing opposite guys like Overreem and Hong Man Choi anyway.

He probably has an over inflated ego because he spars smaller dudes and beats on them easily even though they have years of training over him and are probably more skilled, but cant do any damage because of his size.

It's like....why would you be proud of that. Gotta prove yourself against someone your own size.

I spar people from 120 all the way up to 160 lbs. At least I challenge myself to spar bigger dudes.
