Things that are likely found by most to be more positive about London
- It's a very beautiful city and with a lot more interesting buildings.
London is a tapestry of historical layers, it's an extremely "explorable" city and even areas that one may not expect to be tourist worthy are wonderful to explore. You could just jump off at a random station and there is a good chance around this transport node will be a "village green", a pub, some nice shops and it will feel pleasant. In comparison, due to the grid pattern, lack of history, poor urban furniture, New York is incredibly ugly.

- More obviously designed.
This sounds strange but I feel whenever I return to London that a strong sense of design has been employed. Just one deliberately non obvious example, the tube has more architecturally interesting and varied stations, the inside of the tube train will have colour coded railings, seats and be well lit and with interesting tube maps that look good. There will be a lot of recently updated ads in the all with provocative claims and nice photography.

- It's more strikingly modern features.
This may sound odd for an older city, but returning there is a much stronger sense of modernity in large scale projects. While New York has the new WTC, the new South Ferry Terminus and a Fulton street interchange the predomininant experience of being in New York is that of creaky old infrastructure. It's an arrival into an awful crumbling airport, a taxi along crumbly streets, through old bridges into quite ugly streets.
London while generally older is punctuated by a lot of the ultra modern, whether it's a chance arrival at Heathrow T5, a journey in on the new Heathrow Express going past very old houses, arriving at quite a recently refurbished Paddington with quite interesting modern lighting and street furniture, before spending a lot of time on the very old feeling Circle line.

- More extensive public transport.
London has a much more extensive public transport system, this map does not even include buses.
http://www.tfl.gov.uk/assets/dow...
It's more obviously there as well, take parts of south London where overground trains when you look out of the plane window take up vast swathes of land to form arteries to the city. Visit Waterloo at 6pm on a Tuesday and compare the freneticism here with that of Penn Station, there is no comparison. You can even get a seat on the New York trains.

- More Newspapers
Everywhere you look in London are beautifully designed, well written, , often free newspapers, especially on the commute.

- Flower Arrangements
This is odd, but London has very visable and very plentiful shops selling stunning cut flower arrangements, New York's poor efforts are terrible in comparison.

- More sophisticated retailing
Another odd one, but London's grocery and chemist stores are a vast improvement on New York's. They may ALL be chains, but visit any Tesco or Waitrose and it's so much nicer than any New York equivalent. They are nicer lit, offer much better goods and at far better prices, they also seem more sophisticated in their selling, offering multibuys, plentiful special offers and much more thought out store design. Shopping for food in London is a delight in comparison.

Things that are likely found by most to be more positive about New York

- More social, more outspoken.

New York is really really fun. People here don't ignore each other, there is frequent drama and conversation wherever you go. People are much friendlier and much more happy to actually chat. It's delightful to be somewhere so interesting and human. London in comparison feels like some alien world where people have been trained to go about life completely ignoring each other, either through eye contact or words.

- More compact
New York as considered by annoying people like me, is basically Manhattan below 120 street and the islands of Dumbo and Williamsburg. This makes it a tiny city. If I were randomly to ask my 5 best friends to visit my London flat on a Saturday AM at 11am, it would likely take each 45 mins, walking and taxi's would perhaps be an option for 1 person. In New York it would take each 10-20 mins, we all live very close to each other. I live in FiDi and people mock me for living 5 mins tube, 5 mins taxi and 12 mins walk from TriBeCa or the East Village and day where I live is a terrible location. In London this would be considered bang in the middle of it all.

- More exciting
London has nothing like the buzz.
It's odd because New Yorkers are not as impatient, rude, or fast walking and talking as you may think. It's amazing how people can patiently wait for a Subway for 12 mins in NYC or don't walk up escalators, in London that would bring all sorts of rude rants and sighs of discomfort. But if not that promised franiticness NYC does have an unsurpassed sense of being at the center of the world.

- Larger things.
A lot of things in New York are big and exciting. Bridges, tunnels, cars, everything except peoples apartments are bigger. It's fun!

- More professional work culture.
And a sense of ambition being a good thing. I like it

- More interesting bars and restaurants.

- Alcohol
People in NYC rely less on Alcohol, it's very nice, see social awkwardness in London above.

- More sunshine
It's very sunny here, it makes London feel very very very grey. This is a VERY big deal.

- Cheaper
Most things in NYC are cheaper, income tax a touch lower, and people are paid a whiff more.
Excluding : Groceries, Beer in bars
Most notable difference - Taxi's are a LOT cheaper.

Flag on the play. The more frequented areas of the city by visitors may be Manhattan below uptown and a little bit of Brooklyn but that's not "basically New York". Every Borough has something to offer (maybe not Staten Island). Born and raised in Astoria and were not some outside city that is coincidentally next to New York.

like the guy says, we don't really do small talk or speak to strangers unless we've been drinking. and we're very quiet compared to native new yorkers

Well damn you guys must be anti social af in London then lol
When I went on vacation to NY everybody just walked with there eyes straight down, not really any small talk or anything. The store owners and restaurant people were very nice to talk to, as was the cab drivers, but the everyday people seemed liked they couldn't care less about everyone around them lol
Not saying it's really that bad of a thing, but here in Ohio people at much more friendly and make small talk like it's nothing

New York is not social.

We don't talk to strangers if we don't have to, but if someone sees you enjoying something they like on the subway then you guarantee they'll talk to you about it. I've had a bunch of people talk to me about sports because they see I'm reading something about the Yankees in the newspaper.
