I've clapped for movies and have seen audiences in general do it on at least a few occasions. I kinda like it.

I've NEVER seen people applaud an airplane landing despite being on like 75 flights in the past couple years. It seems like there's too much awkwardness and close proximity for someone to pull the trigger and be the first dude to clap. I've wanted to be that first guy - especially during an impressively smooth landing during high winds (an impressive act of skill by the pilots that deserves recognition) - but it always just felt too awkward.

Clapping on an airplane legit makes more sense than clapping after a movie, but both are silly.

Also, applauding an airplane landing doesn't strike me as silly. The passengers, as a small community, are communally showing their appreciation for the difficult and highly skilled job done by the pilot, the guy who has essentially served as the little community's leader for the past several hours.

So if you think piloting a plane is comparable to being an uber driver, I take it you would be in favor of allowing airlines to hire people off the street to be pilots? I bet they could lower ticket prices if they did that!

Not a knock on the skill of pilots or whatever, I just think someone doing their job normally isn't particularly applause-worthy.

If the pilot landed the plane with two engines dead or something, then yeah, I can understand it. Not for routine regular-ass flight tho

No but when I was in London I saw Rogue One and they did there. Not sure if it's a London thing or because the third act of that movie was so good.
