awful review.

if you've never heard of Frank Ocean you'd have no clue what Channel Orange sounds like. In a funny turn of events, no one has spent more time talking about Frank Ocean's sexual preferences than Pitchfork.

Though I agree with the score. Channel Orange is as close to a 10 as possible without being a 10.

I still have to listen to Life is Good

or any Nas album besides Illmatic

Odd Future is killing it this year, OF tape vol. 2 was great besides a few bad songs (it's still Odd Future), Hodgy's Untitled EP is short but sweet, Channel Orange is one of the best releases this year and we still have Domo (& Alchemist!) and MellowHype records coming soon which should both be really good. Maybe even Tyler's new record who knows. Also Earl release some solo music already damn

I think they're both fairly close in quality, but I give the nod to Mass Romantic because: it's more chaotic, and I like that; it has Neko Case's best performances on any New Pornos album, even though she's grown more comfortable with her voice over time; it doesn't have "Three or Four" or "The Bones of An Idol," neither of which I like at all (and I'm not too big on "Twin Cinema," either"); and as great as "The Bleeding Heart Show" is, and it's really great, I might like both "Mass Romantic" and "Letter from an Occupant" just a touch more.

augh

i think i might spend the day listening to new pornos.

Track by track

Mass Romantic > Twin Cinema
The Fake Headlines > The Bones of an Idol
Use It > The Slow Descent Into Alcoholism
The Bleeding Heart Show > Mystery Hours
Jackie, Dressed in Cobras > Jackie
Letter from an Occupant > The Jessica Numbers (this is much closer than most think)
These Are the Fables > To Wild Homes (also really close, but midcard rather than top tier)
Sing Me Spanish Techno > The Body Says No
Execution Day > Falling Through Your Clothes
Broken Beads > Centre for the Holy Wars
The Mary Martin Show > Three or Four
Star Bodies > Breakin' the Law

Now, Twin Cinema has two more tracks - Streets of Fire and Stacked Crooked, which are better than almost everything in the first 12. If we replaced them in for weaker songs...

Streets of Fire > Execution Day > Falling Through Your Clothes
Stacked Crooked > The Mary Martin Show > Three or Four

something like that

The Slow Descent into Alcoholism > Use It
The Bleeding Heart Show > Mystery Hours
Jackie > Jackie, Dressed In Cobras
Letter from an Occupant > The Jessica Numbers
To Wild Homes > These Are the Fables
The Body Says No > Sing Me Spanish Techno (very close)
Execution Day > Falling Through Your Clothes
Broken Beads > Centre for Holy Wars (Holy Wars takes it if we're comparing live tracks though, so good)
The Mary Martin Show > Three or Four
Star Bodies > Breakin' The Law

Not that I'm in favour of such a binary ranking system. And yeah, "Streets of Fire" is great. Top five New Pornos song, easily.

My favorite radio station, WFNX, is going off the air tonight at 7pm. It's been on the air for 29 years, and was instrumental in breaking a ton of alternative bands, most notably Nirvana (and virtually any band from Boston worth mentioning), all while being independently owned and operated.

Normally, they do a free-form Friday, but since the station goes off the air tonight, they did it last night.

This is the playlist they played for their last night on the air.

http://tjconnelly.com/2012/07/20/the-last-night-of-wfnx/

It's honestly one of the best playlists I've ever had the pleasure of hearing.

last five songs

PJ Harvey - Down by the Water
Pixies - Gigantic
Patti Smith - Gloria
David Bowie - Changes
The Cure - Let's Go to Bed (which was also the first song they played in 1983)

I am not ashamed to say that I started tearing up during Gigantic and started openly crying during Changes. I owe so much of my love of music to this station, it's such a goddamned shame to see it go.

It sucks when this happens. My favourite radio show, Brave New Waves, went off the air in 2007. I listened to it nearly every night at midnight for seven years. That show introduced me to so many acts: GY!BE, Kim Hiorthoy, Supersilent, William Basinski, Mirah, Destroyer, Kevin Drumm - the list goes on.

The only strange outliers on that list are North and Oneirology (without A Piece of Strange no less) but I like both of those albums anyways. Good stretches in there, 58-53 is a real hot streak. We have cultured ourselves here rather broadly now haven't we?

I wouldn't wanna clique with anyone else, boo

here I am talkin to myself

Sorry to hear about your guys radio stations, much respect to the Nirvana breakage.

also, reading the Life is Good review, this paragraph is the truest thing Pitchfork has ever published

Life Is Good is so consistent, in fact, that it's disorienting, and those of us with a long history navigating Nas albums will have a lot of pressing questions: What are all these top-shelf beats doing here? Where are the queasy sex jams, the songs rapped from the perspective of heroin spoons or discarded E&J bottles, the choruses about being a Warrior and a Hero? Where is the blindingly ill-fitting Nas Radio Bid? (The lone example, the Swizz Beatz-produced "Summer on Smash", is just inoffensively generic.) But above all: What happened this time?

It's about living well as the best revenge after a breakup you fools. This is Nas's most emotionally mature work yet (yes, I might even argue with Illmatic despite how mature the guy was as a teen) and the top-notch beats are only proof that he's still got an ear for it, probably a better ear now than he's had in the past. If there's one criticism I would make it's that the beats are actually *almost* too clean-cut, they sound as if Nas wanted to make a Kanye album as far as scope of musical backdrop. Actually I'm undecided if this is a criticism or not because he takes Kanye's 'bowl you over with class' aesthetic and actually applies more finesse and intelligence to it, but up to the point where it tries to be so majestic it becomes nearly campy and self-parodic. I've only heard the album twice so I'll reserve judgment but I really like it so far.

Ohnomite is still better.
