So freaking angry. Set myself up with the intent to study Japanese tonight for two hours and I keep getting error 2123 when I try to launch the application. Everything I've tried from the internet has failed.

Fortunately it was an 'obtained' version and not something I paid hundreds of dollars for but still, this is frustrating and I'm worried about throwing down money for the real program when people who actually have bought it are still getting this BS problem.

Ugh. At least I didn't slice any body parts today.

Play Slime Forest Adventure. There's a free version and it's pretty fun. I think an intro membership is 10 bucks and a full is 25. I have one guest intro and one guest full account left, but I'm only gonna offer those to someone who's serious about using it.

Here ya go. Basically it's one of many tools for learning Japanese. Several modes (katakana + hirigana, straight to kanji, etc) as well as a variety of ways to adjust how often you see new stuff, how often things repeat, how a mistake is treated, and so on. A free copy gets you a few hundred kanji alongside the katakana and hiragana, the intro gives like 1000 kanji and the full is a good 3-4 thousand kanji and the full game.

Ah, intro is only 5 bucks. Nice.

Ok as someone who actually taught himself Japanese for free I have some very good tips for you. I will assume that you are a total noob, if not then skip steps as appropriate.

1: Go here: http://www.learn-japanese.info/

This is the ultimate noob resource for just learning the most basic grammar and expressions in a logical and easy way. It's useless after like a week though when you get the basics down.

2: Next, go here: http://www.guidetojapanese.org/learn/

This is considered by many to be the best free online guide to Japanese, but it has a steeper learning curve than the previous one.

3: You'll want to learn Hiragana at this point, and Katakana soon after. Go here: http://www.realkana.com/ and you'll learn them crazy fast.

4: The top non-free Japanese guide is the Genki book series. I recommend using these in addition to the online guides, but that doesn't mean you have to actually pay for them...

5: Once you get a grip on the kana, you have to start learning Kanji. And there is one resource for this that is far and away the best: http://kanjidamage.com/

6: To practice Kanji you have to download a program called Anki. Look it up and you'll realize why this is a must.

And this is how you learn Japanese smoothly with little to no tiresome memorization or repetition.

Yeah it's trying to save you from itself.

EDIT: Also in addition to Realkana for learning Hiragana/Katakana, I'd recommend trying these as little 'games' to help you improve your memory on them.

http://www.csus.edu/indiv/s/sheaa/projects/genki/katakana-timer.html

Helps break up the sessions so you're not doing the same thing over and over.

Don't you live in Japan? Just go to a maid cafe or something and listen to the greasy old guys talk.
