Within the week, the SCOTUS should release its ruling on healthcare reform-- either upholding the law, striking it down entirely, or striking down only the individual mandate (which would essentially nullify the law).
My prediction: The individual mandate gets struck down 5-4, leaving existing parts of the law intact until further reform is passed.
If that happens, I am taking off work to celebrate liberty by getting drunk, and any freedom lovers in the NYC area may come join me.

The fact that it forces people to have it rather than just providing an option for everyone is what annoys me about the bill.
It's unfortunate, because had the bill simply taken the equivalent in tax dollars and then redirected those funds towards purchasing healthcare, it would've been entirely constitutional. As-is, however, it's hard to justify (although remember that Obamacare is rather watered-down, and this is coming from a conservative).
I predicted a 5-4 decision Against a few months back, and I stick by that. This'll be what ultimately swings the election in favor of Romney.

And I would have been fine with that.

In a world where if you get sick, go to the hostpiral and dont pay, the costs get passed onto taxpayers and/or increase the cost of healthcare, we NEED an individual mandate in the same way all people who drive need at least SOME form of insurance.
Real reform wouldve been instituting some form of universal healthcare, but this countrys too conservative for that, so were stuck with a less than ideal solution to a real problem.

Solution to get more people covered: Everyone who has insurance (either individually or through their employer) gets a check every year.
There's your incentive to buy health insurance, and a nice tax refund to boost business while we are at it.
Isnt this essential whats happening now? Everyone has to buy insurance, but they get a tax credit towards the endeavour. isnt that essentiall the same thing?

excepting the unconstitutionally being forced into buying insurance part
as someone who lives a very short distance from communist massachusetts, this better be struck down. the less like that degenerate hell hole the rest of the country is the better.

I like this proposal, but the problem is that it wouldn't apply to those in the lower class, who are living paycheck to paycheck and won't be motivated by some long-term incentive.

Not really. Almost everyone's insurance today is covered through one's employer, and it's those who don't have access to stable jobs that are the real concern when it comes to going uninsured. Another part of the reason Mersh's idea falls a little short.

That's what Medicaid is for

So you're in favor of Medicaid then? Many Republicans I know aren't, but I can't speak for you personally.

as much as I would like universal hc for the people of america the fact is that obamacare is fundamentally flawed with the mandate and needs to be retooled in order to succeed.

Plus if the Court strikes down Obamacare, Romney will get a HUGE boost, since it validates 2 years of unconstitutionality messages from the Republicans.

Eh, I don't think it will have a big effect on the elections.
Everyone already has their minds made up when it comes to Obamacare and this ruling is unlikely to change that for the vast majority of voters. Its supporters will still want universal healthcare to happen and will continue to support Obama on that, its detractors will continue to dislike Obama's approach (or Universal Healthcare in general) and support the Republican party on that.
The people like me who had a problem with the mandate but still want universal healthcare won't change their opinion on the candidates at all due to this ruling.

Itll help Romney raise money...or will it.
Actually if there are theoretical people who were supporting Romney JUST for the repeal of obamacare, this could HURT him overall couldnt it?

I still think it's hilarious how the mandate was originally a Republican idea

I think it will resonate very strongly with independent voters to hear that Obama's pinnacle legislative achievement as President is unconstitutional.
I still doubt it. I'm sure most independents are like me (yes, I'm an independent voter) and made up their mind on this issue a long time ago. The decision is hardly surprising.

I'm not even a democrat, I just love the hypocrisy. I don't even really like the mandate because I'd way rather have an actual universal health care system.
And for corrections, they were still pushing it 10 years ago as their idea. When it was formed is less relevant

Yeah dude, get off it. Things change.
What matters is what is best for the country right now.

as far as the supreme court ruling goes, I have no idea what's actually going to happen. You'd think the supreme court would leave the mandate up because it was intended to be the trade-off to the companies for the being unable to deny preexisting conditions thing by giving them a broader customer base, and the supreme court has already proven themselves corporate tools. Is it possible for them to trash the whole thing here or is only the mandate up for ruling?

The whole law is up for ruling, but the Supreme Court has every right to strike down parts of laws while keeping the rest intact.
