Night rounds are acceptable... But if they only start at 1:06 AM it's quite hard for me to get here you know :-(... I stayed awake until 0:45 AM, quite late considering I have another job application today... If the round hasn't started at that time yet, I can't put alarm clocks...

I actually wonder... Why do you guys call the night round a night round... For Suor and for me that's the case, since it starts around midnight, but for you it's just an evening round...

I didn't really like Mother Gothel the first time I watched Tangled, but she's definitely a different kind of evil villain. "Mother Knows Best" sounds well-meaning but the entire song is filled with jabs and insults directed towards Rapunzel.

Hidden evil is a pretty common trope for Disney, but she is different in several ways.

Rapunzel should go ahead and bash Flynn 60 or so more times with that frying pan. I know we weren't supposed to like the two brutes he was working with, but ripping them off and stealing their share of the profit isn't a great way to get me to like someone.

I'd also say she's far and away the funniest of the Disney princesses, and probably the one with the most personality as well.

Yeah, that's not a hard feat accomplish however >_>

Yeah, I'll probably get a lot of flack for placing Home on the Range #1 on my rankings list, but I just can't fight how tremendous it is as a piece of art.

Gothel is clever early on. Many villains would panic at the point of her song reprise but she keeps her chances of getting what she desires alive for the time being.

Gothel set that up perfectly. Break Rapunzel's heart while convincing Rapunzel what she's been saying all along - the world is an evil place filled with evil men. What's even more is she did all this while coming out on top in the end by saving Rapunzel's life. After that Rapunzel would never want to leave the tower again.

Very clever.

Hm, yeah. I dunno how it's possible to dislike Flynn there.

I dunno, you could argue he prevented numerous people from ever receiving her gift in the future. Pretty heroic nonetheless. I came into this looking for reasons to hate Flynn, but I can't. He's an arrogant douche in the beginning but he turns it around. I'll still be gunning for his elimination though!

Well, yeah but that basically would have trapped Rapunzel forever and she'd have never had a normal life. He was willing to die to prevent her from never being an actual person, and that gets some credit in my book.

I guess I'm not really mad at Flynn for advancing looking back at all that mess, devoted fans trading for their character (and maybe dooming him because of it though) is all that was. Not really what I didn't like.

This part is definitely heroic. However, the smart thing to do there would have been to let Rapunzel heal him, and let Gothel take Rapunzel away. Obviously neither he nor Rapunzel would stay true to their word. Flynn would have followed Gothel to the ends of the earth after that, and there's no way Rapunzel would be content to remain Gothel's life source. Even if Gothel continuously bound her, Rapunzel was obviously very resourceful with her hair. She would have escaped eventually and that would have been that. Then she'd be free to use her hair for good.

Evil would always exist though, and Rapunzel would always be sought after by it. I like to think that meeting her and getting to know her, Flynn realized this and just wanted her to finally be free of the burden she had always carried.

He unburdened Rapunzel, but that wasn't his decision to make.

Gothel would have been gone sure, but the secret was already out because Gothel had told the Stabbingtons and I highly doubt they kept it a secret. Someone would have come looking for her even if Gothel was dead.

I guess so, but at that point she would be in the castle and protected by a number of armed guards and of course, Flynn. I think that's just the risk you have to take with a gift as special as that. It could have helped a lot of people, and I think if it was up to Rapunzel she would have risked her safety in a heartbeat in order to help the greatest number of people possible. My point isn't that what Flynn did wasn't heroic - it was, although maybe a little premature and foolish. I just don't think it was his decision to make at all.

I don't see it that way. If Rapunzel heals him and allows herself to be led away then she'd find herself bound up and unable to make full use of her hair. It still isn't a very good end game at that point because of the chance that Rapunzel would refuse food and let herself die. Honestly Gothel was super screwed but she still could have made months or years hell for Rapunzel.

But even so her ability to manipulate Rapunzel psychologically had been shown throughout the movie and so while it is unlikely that Rapunzel would ever be in her camp again she would still have allowed herself to be used to extend her life. Maybe it would be the sort of thing where she says "oh btw I have assassins who will kill Flynn if I ever do not check in with them for more than X days" forcing her to play ball. And so as far as Rapunzel knows Flynn is off living his life and the only thing keeping him alive is her obedience.

You're definitely right about Gothel's ability to manipulate her psychologically. Throughout the film we see how effective she is at doing so. That is until she realizes Gothel isn't actually her mother but rather a selfish kidnapper, and an evil human being. In that scene alone Rapunzel actually stands up to her, and it's clear she no longer views Gothel as she once did. At this point, although a situation never arises in the film, I don't think Gothel's manipulation would have the same effect. The only way I could see Gothel possibly have the upper hand is as you said, Gothel bluffing she has assassins lined up to kill Flynn. But even this is reaching at straws, and I doubt Rapunzel would fall for it. Even if she did, Flynn would still be on the hunt for her, most likely with Maximus and his tracking ability at his side. And seriously it would be pretty difficult to hide a girl like Rapunzel, especially if Gothel was forced to restrain her 24/7.

That hidden tower was the perfect location. There's no way Gothel would be able to find another place before Flynn found her.

I'm not saying that it was a strong end game situation, but I think its not just conceivable, but likely that Gothel's next (and only play) is to convince Rapunzel that her obedience is the only thing keeping him alive.

I'm not sure how much she could have done in that situation to (1) get away and (2) prevent Flynn from following immediately, but assuming she'd managed to do that then she's in the position of power again.

But Flynn's attempted sacrifice circumvents the problem completely in addition to being completely selfless.

Flynn didn't know cutting Rapunzel's hair would kill Gothel though. All he knew was that it was what she desired. The result could have been disastrous for him. Maybe once Rapunzel's hair is gone Gothel kills Rapunzel out of spite. He sacrificed himself, but he did so unaware of the impact cutting her hair would have. It was heroic but reckless, and he didn't think clearly before doing it. And he prevented people in the future from benefiting from her hair's healing powers. He had no right to do that.

Except that power corrupts.

These faceless "people in the future" would have desired her power to the point that she would never have had a normal life. I don't see the public knowledge of her hair's power being anything but disastrous.

No, she never would have. That's true. I never said anything to refute that. All I'm saying is that it wasn't Flynn's decision to make for her. It was Rapunzel's.

Plus it's Disney. I'm sure they could have simply tweaked the ending to have a happily ever after to it where all the people in the kingdom live in healthy harmony thanks to Rapunzel's hair. <_<

Meh, I wouldn't have changed a thing. I won't take out my frustration on Flynn, I've decided.

For those interested, Pocahontas watch tomorrow (likely DURING the morning round) because I have to go to work in the evening. Mailing the movies back is the quickest way to get more in!
