Depends on the type of problem detected. It can range from you being lucky to turn on your drive to failure likely within a month. Go to your hard drive manufacturer's site and download a diagnostic tool from them if you want to know the exact cause. Anything mechanical sounding is a "you're lucky to be able to turn it on and you should be trying to backup immediately".

I would disconnect it for now. Don't need to remove it from the web it is suspended in, just unplug it so it is not powered.
