I finished Mass Effect 1 yesterday and loved it so much I got Mass Effect 2 today. The Vanguard Class is really not the same, though. I haven't actually started yet, but the Instructions Booklet seems to suggest that they removed half of the biotic powers I came to love so much in Mass Effect 1, like Throw and Warp. How the hell do they expect me to clear the game without the awesome ability to show my foes who's boss Kamehameha style?
The Vanguard was indeed changed for ME2 and ME3. However, I advise you to do the following -- pick it anyway, max Biotic Charge ASAP and come back to this topic and apologize for ever doubting its glory.
I'm pretty curious about the sniper rifle, I never got to use it in ME1. It was like the kind of curiosity you get when you fell like you want to bang a red headed chick but never actually got to do it, like... an itch you could never scratch.
From: mildare_el_rayo | #004 I lol'd there. How's Adept?
Adept took the biggest hit -- although it's positively banging all over again come ME3. And well, to be fair, my girlfriend insists the Adept never got nerfed in ME2, but most of the fandom believes otherwise.
I am quite serious though, don't doubt the Vanguard just because it was modified. There's a reason its Charge ability is pretty much the fan favorite. Although to be perfectly fair and reasonable, it's still not my favorite class... but it is the favored class of many, many players! And the majority of the rationale for that only begins with ME2.

Er, Adept is still in the game. And they still do have Throw. I just told you the general fandom consensus that the changes to gameplay mechanics kind of gimped the class for ME2.

Just play the f***ing game. It's too different from ME1 and with the attitude you seem to have about it, you won't like the changes at first. Just keep playing. Eventually you'll realize how great and better it is than the first game.
Throw really isn't that impressive in ME2. You'll find other powers and abilities to love instead.
