And when I was proposing this idea to two of my friends, two REAL GIRLS overheard us and decided that they want to join. Even after I warned them that it was a fair time commitment

Unfortunately, they're all relying on my limited experience with role playing games to guide them through everything. I played Pendragon and D&D for a while a couple years ago. Is there any game that I could set up to play by Sunday without owning any rulebooks, etc? I want to play Pendragon but I remember that requiring a book.

if you wanna be completely legal and not spend money, you can do 3.5 and use this site: http://www.d20srd.org/

otherwise, I'm sure you can figure out ways of procuring the materials you need. Which versions of D&D have you played? 4e is generally considered easier to learn, but if you already know 3.5 you'd probably be better off with that. I can't say I have any experience with Pendragon.

You'll probably want to start off fairly low level (like 2 or 3 for 3.5, 3 or 4 for 4) so that they don't spend forever building characters and figuring them out. Afterwards just put them through a small sample combat encounter, and maybe a sample skills encounter as well if you have time.

As far as building an actual campaign, there are tons of premade ones for D&D 3.5. My first experience with D&D I was a PC in the Red Hand Of Doom premade campaign, and it was a lot of fun. Though that requires level 5 or 6 characters at the start.
